Advice needed on healing cut hocks.

Hello,

My horse had a tantrum in the lorry on Friday and scraped the back of his hocks. They are not deep cuts but have taken the hair and top few layers of skin off so it is down to the raw and bloody flesh.

He is not lame but they are sore to touch. I have kept him stabled to try and keep them clean as our fields are very muddy as he loves to roll.

I have been putting antiseptic cream on them as I thought it would help to keep them moisturised. Has anyone had any experiece of a similar injury and what else can I put on them that would encourage the hair to grow back?

Aloe Vera gel - thats all i use on my horses when they cut themselves. Its great stuff, will promote healing and also hair growth.

Hi there my mare got caught up in the tape of the electric fence last year (it wasn't on fortunately) she got it round her hind legs and it cut into the front of the hock, she wasn't lame but had quite a nasty cut there. I used derma gel which can be bought from the tack shop (around £12) much dearer from the vets. I dressed her day and night and kept it covered with a sterile dressing (again bought from the tack shop) I taped it on with insulation tape. We kept her in work and it healed beautifully. Once it was healed I dresssed it with Alo Vera gel to get the hair back and you can hardly see were it was now. You just need to keep the wound clean and keep dressing it and it should heal nicely. Hope he goes on alright.

Use soft hock boots to protect when he's getting up and down. One of ours did something similar a couple of weeks ago and kept knocking the top off in the stable (despite being on mats) and we used a premier equine hock boot, and now it has had a chance to heal.
