Kao will be 1 year old in may. currently where we are she lives out with 2 others. there is 5 horses/ponies in total.
2 ponies inc Kao's old nanny are leaving for the easter hols. leaving 3.
1 is a gelding and he's pretty aggressive with other horses esp where food is concerned so when we're down to 3 he'll be on his own, which he's ok with. 1 is a mare who Kao has been living with already. but she's never been left on her own except for when she's stabled and then she can see every other horse from there as it's an open plan type thingy.
anyway the dilemma i'm having is that the 2 that are left will be getting ridden during the holidays. and i'm concerned Kao will go mental if left on her own, esp if they go off for a hack rather than staying on site.
i can't be there 24/7 and i've no idea when the 2 will be ridden.
i'm thinking about seeing about getting a short term companion until there are more horses on site. just not sure where i'll find 1. plus haven't mentioned to my OH about it. or should i just wait and let Kao get on with it? i just don't want my baby broken in some way by being left alone at such a young age, or is it better that she tries to adjust now? i also don't want a horse with seperation issues later on.
fences are all electrified but tend to be turned off when anyone is on site which is another concern. as when my old boss 1st tried to seperate her from her mum she ran through several fences to get back to mum

what about offering a rescue horse or pony a home it s good for the other horse and good for yours

i can't afford 2 long term but could certainly manage short term i.e a month or 2, if it was a long term thing then i would look at the ILPH for example. more horses will be coming in soon as the place opens up to be a riding school. but until then there will just be the 3

I would try and get a companion. If it's only temporary do you not have a friend who could loan you a someone? It would be better to do it asap so it can be established before the others leave. Hope you find a solution, I have sleepless nights over such dilemma's!

tbh at some point she will have to get used to being on her own when others enter/leave the field and are ridden, seems like a good time to start!

yup had a very bad night last night as i had been fine in the knowledge that the mare Kao is in with was not going to be ridden during the hols only to find out that there is someone who will be riding her now

whereabouts are you in scotland? i have a pony who's being a total pain with rider on but is fine to handle otherwise, back man is out this week to check him over, if he says not to ride for a while and your near enough to me then i could possibly lend you him for a holiday!!
