Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some advice here...

I am planning to put my mare in foal, she was in season very obviously end feb, but was in our opinion too early to cover. We have teased her for the last month and although she showed in season last week, she only showed slightly (not at all like normal for her) and wouldn't stop squealing and kicking out at the stallion, so we didn't get her covered.

My friend (experienced breeder and owns the stallion) is now talking about PGing her. what does this exactly involve and when should it be done? I am keen to get her covered asap, as don't want a late foal. I'd rather she was covered naturally than AI, as would my friend, as she is the only mare the stallion is covering this year and they are kept on the same yard.

Many Many thanks!

Have you had the mare scanned? For PG to be effective you need the mare to have ovulated at least 5/6 days previously so there's a CL present on the ovary to be lysed. Otherwise it can be totally ineffective or at worst delay onset of oestrus if she has an overly large follicle present and you PG.

Giving the mare PG (Prostaglandin) basically forces her to re-cycle by lysing the CL present on the ovary and inducing oestrus.

she sounds like she may be low on Eostrogen and I would san her and see what the vet says he may recommend regumate for a short time then PG her, after that hard winter it would not suprise me we have only had one lot of season here with four broodmares 3 weeks ago thats quiet late as one girl will cycle in a warm winter
