I am looking to get back into riding and want to get my own horse. Had lessons many years ago and did stable management courses on basic horsecare but never owned a horse. Want to make sure I give a horse the best care but concerned about my lack of experience so do I:
Try and get a share or loan in a livery yard and build up experience with knowledgeable people on hand?
Or option B buy my own horse from the start and keep at livery with knowledgeable people on hand?
If buying - any advice as to who to enlist for help/advice? I live in Aberdeenshire
any advice greatly appreciated:D:D:D
also i am 5ft 8" and 11 + stones thinking horse 16 hands and over?

I think your best bet would be to have some lessons again and then look for a share or part loan.

Owning is very different to having lessons and I think you'd be better to ease yourself into it gradually and build up a knowledge base before you plunge in at the deep end :)

I was in the same situation a few years ago and I did exactly as the previous post suggests and am doing that now. Have some lessons to see if you want to get back into it as a starter.

Originally I looked to loan etc but had good advice from a close relative nearby who has always had horses. Had the lessons, couldnt find a loan, found my cob on horse and hound, and the rest is history. Just retired him and looking again for similar. I have just had my first lesson last week after many years of happy hackering!

I would definitely make sure you have someone that you can call on for advice if you get a horse(I mean at most times). Why not do one of the livery yard schemes where you rent a horse and care for it at pre arranged times etc to see what you think of that ie having to go in the winter etc etc.

If you then go to ownership be on a yard where you can call on for advice. Once you get to know your horse and get more confident the world is your oyster. It took me a year to really get to know my boy. Quirks and features! Go for it!

Thanks for your advice, difficult to know what to put your energy into at this stage finding the right horse or gaining more practical experience. The livery scheme sounds like a good idea, intend checking that out with the local stables, thanks again :)
