She has been really itchying around her tail and rump area for the last week so I gave her a bath with dermoline shampoo on friday but it doesnt seem to have made a difference. then yesterday even when I ran my hand around her rump she would almost fall over it was that itchy, she really seems agitated by it and really quiet, she then managed to itch it on her stable door and the hair just came out in a chunk!!then when we when to the beach she would normally be like a tank but she really wasnt bothered! some people have said it may be lice but I have never experienced them so im not sure,........ any ideas????

Good luck!

The reason I said flystrike was exchange the word horse for rabbit in your post and it would be textbook, although the rabbit is usually dead within 24 hours.

I agree it could be lice, or flystrick but i would have thought you would have seen maggots or a hole eaten somewhere. Just a thought, but horses sometimes get lice because there immune system is a bit low, perhaps the lathargic ways need investigating. Lice are tiny brown insects you need good eyesight and will find them mainly under the mane or around the tail, they are quite easy to treat, but dont bother with the louse powder you can buy, its rubbish, ask your vet he will give you comething that works. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon, goodluck

Could be lice but if it was I think she would be itchy in more than one area. What's her coat like and does she have any lumps? Best to ask vet's advice I think.

well I got out to her last night and had a good look and yes it is lice!! I got some powder that the vet said was good and lagged her in that last night so hopfully she should stop itching a bit now, how often should I repeat it???

repeat weekly in most cases, for a few weeks 3/4 to get all the emerging lice, also treat rugs etc. Hope she is soon back to herself
