My friends horse Ted has got a weird lump come up on his back about 4 inches away from his spine, its a bit smaller than the palm of my hand, its risen about half an inch and a perfect circle, his back isn't sore but even if you touch the lump really gently its painful bless him. he's been rugged 24/7, my mate thought maybe he rolled on something but we've check the field and cant see anything. I thought id post on here as you all give good advice. have any of you seen anything like this before? mate said if its still there tomorrow she'll phone the vet. heres some pictures but they aren't very good as i didnt have my camera with me, so took pics on my phone and took pics of my phone!
As you can see the fur is sticking up round the edges.
I'll be most grateful of any ideas/advice.

could it be a bite from another horse? Its just looking at it sat here it appears to be the right shape for a horses mouth to have taken a chunk.

Is it where the back of the saddle panel goes on one side of the spine. Could the saddle be rubbing?

It appears to be quite a large area - I would definately get the vet to check it out.

he hasn't been ridden since monday and it appeared yesterday, i think she'll get the vet tomorrow. but we wanted to see if any of you lovely HHO's knew what it could be!

My god - it looks like a crop circle! Never seen anything like it but to me it looks far too regular for a bite, and no broken skin. I'd be ultra suspicious of the saddle for starters.

Looks a little bit like a lump that one of my horses got, though his was quite firm and not painful to the touch. Vet said it was caused by my saddle rubbing. Wasn't really sure about that as he never got it again and I had my saddle checked.

Anyway, bought this really weird stuff from local tack shop that you stuck on and left until it fell off. it did the trick after about a week I then I spent a further month picking off all the sticky glue!
