We have been going through a bit of a hoof crisis recently with a horse who has lost a few shoes, damaged the hoof wall, created problems for the farrier with nowhere to nail onto, and poor hoof growth so we have been going nowhere fast.

I am now feeding Formula 4 Feet which is very highly rated for good hoof growth and quality. I had been feeding Top Spec before that in the belief it was as good as a hoof supplement, but to be honest the hoof wall currently at the ground would have received Top Spec supplementation, and it really isn't at all good. My priority now is growth so we can get rid of the over-nailed area. I haven't ruled out a barefoot holiday or equibuild pads if things don't improve.

Farriers Formula is supposed to be good, but I have heard it isn't palatable and many horses won't eat it. Formula 4 Feet is supposed to be palatable but I have to soak the pellets as otherwise my horse spits them out!!

I am also using Kevin Bacon daily on the advice of the (new) farrier. He has also shod the fronts with quarter clips rather than a toe clip which has improved the general appearance a great deal.

Tamz did you feed balancer or feed I have only just switched over and my boy had bad feet he is a tb so I dont want to undo all the good I have done.

I have used Farriers Formula for years with a horse who is a fussy eater. I also started using Kevin Bacon's Hoof Dressing last year and really like it. I am trying Formula 4 Feet at the moment as my supplier didn't have any FF last time. My fussy eater likes this as well.

Have and still am feeding biotin to my chap.
Used keratex hoof hardner to great effect on him as well (stopped losing shoes!!!!) but have heard this makes there feet brittle. Haven't seen this in my chap who's been on this for nearly 2 years.
However am moving towards the Kevin Bacon stuff as recommened by farrier and find it excellent!!!! (the thrush stuff cleared up bad thrush in one of ours in days!!!!)

My horse has typical thoroughbres feet and over the years I have had huge problems with him. He is 29 now and I have had him since he was three. He is on Biometh Z which I get from the vet and isn't cheap but lasts for ages. His feet are hugely improved.

Thanks guy's i've ordered some kevin bacon hoof dressing.

Still not made my mind up about a supplement. Was thinking about biotin but she was on this a few years ago and it did'nt really do a lot.So still bit of thinking to do about that.

Formula 4 Feet has worked wonders on my TBs feet. They were previously so bad we were looking at resorting to glue on shoes. With a combination of this supplement and a very good farrier his feet are greatly improved.

I use Formula 4 Feet on my veteran - slow growth, splits, cracks, flakes, couldn't keep shoes on for more than 5 mins. It has worked wonders - I know it is meant to take about a year for the hoof to grow fully down but we've seen results in much shorter time than that - after 2 farrier visits (6 weekly) he said it was better and we haven't lost a shoe since so i reckon it really is working and I'll stick to it. They also produce a paint on liquid which we use on his walls and soles as he was often getting thrush / spongy and it has helped too, no more smelly feet, bliss!
