I have found myself with a massive dilemma and would really appreciate some advice/opinions on what to do please.

I bought an unbroken 5yr old TB mare in the spring. We were coming on really well when she injured herself in the field and had to spend the summer on pasture rest. She is now fine and has started back work (foul weather permiting!!)

I have now found out that I am expecting a baby (BIG suprise - was told a couple of years ago that babys might not be an option for me)

So what would you do?

I really want to avoid selling her as in the short time that I have had her we have formed a nice bond and have managed to overcome quite a few issues.

But would anyone want to take a green TB on loan especially at this time of year? She still has so much to learn and still has a couple of issues that need working through. This is another reason I dont want to sell her as I couldnt bear the thought of her ending up in the hands of someone that cant cope with her and her ending up on the slippery slope towards the meat man!

I really dont know what to do here. This is a massive bolt out of the blue and not an issue I was ever expecting to deal with!

First of all, congratulations :D

I don't think it would be impossible to find a good loan home for her but it may be difficult. It's worth asking around as you never know :)

Although it wouldn't be ideal, I wouldn't be averse to turning her back out if there was a way to keep her on grass type livery. You would have to re-back her in a year or so but it wouldn't do her any harm.

Good luck with what ever you decide :)

is money an issue if not get someone to help school her once or twice i week. i no of some people in this area who are capable and would do it for £ 10/15 a hour.

then get someone in who wants to learn more and maybe lunge and hack her a couple of days a week for free.

maybe hard to find but if u dont try ull never no.

any very decent working livery options around. i know where my mare used to be she benifited grately from it. but it has to be the right place that wont just work her into the ground and will continue schooling her.

depending how far on she is in training and ur ability. offer someone a agreement where they get to ride but have to look after her and a condition is that you give the rider a lesson once a week. so its ur horse no money changes hands and u keep alot of the control but they get a free horse to ride. so instead of having to pay they have to give up a bit of their freedom with the horse

i no these where all options id have taken as a older teenager when i had no money but lots of time.

Congratulations! :)

Personally, I would leave her until Spring & then possibly pay an instructor to ride her/bring her back into work.

Have you got any thoughts of what you'll do once the baby arrives?

Thank you for your replies and your congratulations

I had considered turning her away then re-starting her next spring. Theres just something about having a 6yr old that has done practically nothing which irks me slightly! Its not the plan I had when I bought her! But I suppose It may be easier to find a sharer/loan home in the spring.

The sharer option does appeal to me and it is something I hadnt thought of! at least then if problems do arise I will be on hand to help sort them out.

Thank you!!
