Hi,

I am writing on here regarding a friends horse which is unwell at the moment and I wondered if anyone on here have had any similar symptoms and what the diagnosis was. I will 'set the scene'...horse is a 15yo Welsh Sec D gelding. Generally well but has had over the past 10 years she has owned him a few episodes where he has gone down hill. He has had lumps come up on his skin and has had swellings (body and on his head) and hair loss in places, gets depressed (there are probably more symptoms but these are the few I can remember). Her vet has done numerous skin biopsys and blood tests and have all come back inconclusive other than very minor liver damage which the vet said basically so minor not of any concern and being slightly anaemic. Well 2-3 weeks ago he has started to have another one of his episodes. Started off with being REALLY depressed. Lumps have appeared along his withers and back which are so painful to the touch. His front legs swelled up of which is near fore is MASSIVE from elbow down. He has been through a phase of not letting anyone including my friend touch him. Loss of appetite. He has majorly dropped off condition & muscle tone and is looking really old and tucked up also. After being down the vet route many times and putting his symptoms down to an interloerance to something in his feed my friend decided to try the iridology route and the iridologist has said liver problems. He was being fed before this episode started mainly a Simple Systems diet, with Top Spec balancer and GWF joint aid added. The iridologist has suggested bran mash, epsom salts and liver herbs. He can carry on with the simple systems but no balancer or joint aid. Since changing this he has started tucking in to his feed. At current he is still depressed although he has started putting his head over his stable door. Leg is still massive. Lumps have gone down a bit and still funny about being touched. I was just wondering if anyone on here have had any similar experiences or if there are any vets on here who have experienced anything like this. Could it be liver damage? And if so can symptoms peak and then settle down again like it has? My friend has told the vet these symptoms and they still haven't said any concern for liver damage but I have been reading H&H article on it (http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/horsecare/1379/56960.html) and quite a few symptoms are similar. I feel really sorry for my friend as she has spent hundreds of pound on investigating it in the past and with no hard fast answer hence trying the iridology route. Any ideas??

It would be worth doing the ACTH test for Cushings as that can present with a whole host of weird and wonderful symptoms including depression, confusion, loss of appetite, loss of weight, odd liver function results from blood tests, mild ataxia, skin problems that won't heal, infestations that won't clear up, heavy smelly sweating, muscle wastage. Some horses don't get the thick curly coat that won't shed and just get a poor, staring coat that is a little slow to shed. Sadly, Cushings can start as young as 7 or 8 though usual onset is more like between about 15 (25% of horses will have Cushings) to 25 (80% of horses will have Cushings).

Could he have been coming into contact with something each time the lumps etc come up. A few years ago I enthusiastically sprayed my (also Welsh D) mare with a cheaper flyspray than my normal one when I ran out and she came out in huge welts, then didn't want me touching her, and her hair fell out. Turned out she was allergic to the citronella in the spray and I'd effectively given her a chemical burn :(
