I have the offer of grazing on a farm. The grass is about two foot high. Not had horses on it for over twenty years. Was told that about 20 years ago contaminated earth was put on fields. This was dangerous to cows suggested bone vine (not sure if this is correct name). Worried about grass sicknessLaminitus and colic. I have been at my current yard for forty years but now having problems with barbed wire fencing. 3 horses hospitalized (i mine) in last year. Am tempted by new fields. 10 minute drive away. no natural shelter. Current grazing just across road but have to share. Other place would be on own with owner who may get her own horse or want to ride mine. would be cheaper but am worried about grazing horses on new land. Any advice or opinions please.

maybe you could give yourself another option and look for another yard? to be honest I'm not entirely sure who you could ask about the potential risks of this field due to the contaminated earth. probably phone your local council.
aside from the contaminated earth, depends on how much grazing there is. might consider splitting the field up with electric fencing to restrict grazing and to rest the grass. def get someone in to top the grass, or if the grass is suitable get someone to cut hay?
also check the field for any poisonous plants plus the surrounding greenery outside the field.
would your horse be in the field alone or would he have company? I advise not to leave a horse without company, its pretty cruel IMO. also the fact there's no shelter would bother me, def consider getting some form of shelter for the horse, will be worth paying out for. what is the water supply to the field like? have u got the tools to keep the fields clean too? if u only have a limited amount of grazing it will need the droppings picked out regularly.

Thanks for reply. There is 15 acres split into about four fields which would be rotated. I have five horses water is laid on and the farmer has put up new stock fencing which does include barbed wire. Three of my horse horses live out all year but round here the farm I am on is the only one to do all year 24/7 turnout. Other place it is a new venture for her and she is just trying out her options. She wants some income but does not really want loads of people on her place. Because I have 5 horses it will only be me and daughter going there. I am also worried she might start restricting access times.

If the only real problem where you are is the fencing, I think I would invest in some electric fencing to keep my horses away from it and stay put..where you are now sounds very convenient
