Back in 2008 my mare lost a foal,so i lent her out as a foster mum.(A really hard desision to send her away)
The person that had my mare put her in foal for me,and had vet scan her 4 times.A few months ago she foal(full term)and she had twins.....one was born dead, and the other we bottle fed for 48hrs,and lost her too.
When this happened i contacted the person who had her and the vets that were looking after my mare, and got told she was scanned 4 times, and can understand how they missed it,and to claim on their insurance.
I had to have my mare washed out and various other things because of this, and my vet bill came to nearly 350 pounds.
I have tried to claim off the vets insurance, like they told me to do so,and they have offer 150 pounds....this is not going to cover half of my vets bill(the vets had a copy of my bill)
My problems is
1 i feel like i have helped someone, and saved them money, and now im out of pocket
2.not to mention the distress that the whole family have suffered
3loss of an animals life
Do i take the offer of 150 pounds,or do i try and get more.....are the vets liable,or i am just going to be throwing more money away.
What would you all do in this situation?
I feel so used.

I'm surprised they pay anything with claims relating to pregnancy etc. I know when I bred a foal some years ago pregnancy and foaling were not covered. I would take the money you have been offered. I can understand how let down you feel by the people who had your mare. One positive aspect is that your mare is in one piece and wasn't lost as well. Dreadful expereince for you.

I'm no legal expert but I would certainly try for more. at least enough to cover my expenses which seem to have been caused by other people.
Did you request that the mare was covered before you had her back?

Sorry.....didnt make myself clear.....My mare was covered by the person who used her to look after her orphan foal.I guess as an act of kindness. It was offered rather than requested, and i accepted.
Is the vet admitting liability by offering me money?
I dont know what to do!Maybe just cut my loses?

I don't know about the legal side, I just wanted to say I know how you feel...
In the early 00's I had a colt foal that got joint ill, after 2 operations he had to be pts, my mare went to a VERY well known TB stud to be a foster mare, she had been covered on her foaling heat before the foal went into the vet hospital and as the mare was going to them I asked them to have her scanned for me and I said I would pay, they said it was no problem that they would get it done as the colt they had was being quite a handful now and having a foster mare would be a huge help to them, anyway I spoke them a couple of weeks later and they said that she wasn't in foal and she was also back in season, although they wouldn't have their 'valuable' foal moved so she could go to see the stallion, so I left her, when I picked her up she lookd very big so I had the vet do an internal and she was infoal... now at this stage all my vet could do was say yes she was infoal... so we got round to foaling time and she foaled down and all seemed welll, foal was up quickly and all semed well but the mare was acting differently and then she went down and foaled a second foal breach, the second foal lived for an hour and couldn't be saved, the first foal seemed healthy but he to died later on, when we spoke to the stud their attitude was well she was in season, we didn't see the point of wasting money on a scan!!!! I was livid, and to top it off this mare never got infoal again...
