Advice needed

Hi all i could do with some advice, the problem i have is that me and my OH moved out but 6months ago, and as everyone knows you have to cut back on a few things.

At the minute my horse is kept at a lovely yard, he is has brilliant facilites and is all brand new built, he is on working livery so i dont have to worry if i can not make it down, as the yard is about 10miles away from me. At the moment i pay £260 a month and this includes his, shoes, worming, feed basicaly everything.

The thing is though that there is going to be a stbale availabe right next to my house at the end of March, it is DIY and its £25 a week, but would obviosuly have to pay for his feed and the rest seprate.

Now i dont no if i should move him, or do you think i am getting a good deal where i am? As i have never had a horse on DIY so have no idea really of all the different costs of things. So if anyone could give me adive on prices for things would be a great help.

I just really really dont no what to do? PLEASE HELP ME

I think it isn't just about the money. also about the time factor. By the time you have added feed, shoes, wormer, bedding, hay into your DIY deal you will be climbing towards £180 or so. then take into account that you will have to turn out every morning and catch in and feed every evening, and groom, muck out, probably poo pick your paddock and be solely responsible for exercising and care. You will never have a day off unless you can a rope in a friend.

On balance I think you are getting a very good deal where you are and if you are happy with your cerrent arrangement I would stay there
 
Thank you for the advice, i am very happy where i am and i really get on with the yard owner, i just worry about the money side of things and wondered how much of a difference there would be between the two

I recently moved my horse from full livery at a brilliant yard to my own stables, and it is a good bit of work, it had been so long since I looked after him, I totally forgot!!

As long as you have decent grazing secured (which I don't!!

) and somewhere to ride you will be fine, you just have to organise yourself a bit better, saves a few quid too!!
 
Personally I'd move him to nearer me. In the long run it will work out financially around the same if not less (you seem to be paying an awful lot imo). Plus, I like to look after my own horse (which is why most of have them in the first place).
 
You see this is what i have been thinking, that it surley must work out cheaper then 260 a month, where i was going to move him to there is four stables, and two fields, there is plenty of places o ride as there is the river bank not to far away that you ride on for miles.

I think i am going to have a serious think about it this month, it is just one of those things where you dont no if you are doing the right thing or not!
 
I don’t think that there would be that much difference, It works out like this to me

Livery £25, Feed and Hay £15, bedding £10, worming £3, shoeing £9, petrol £5, extras £5 = about £72 per week, (£312 pcm) twinned with the fact that your horse is probably quite fit and if you don’t get to ride him as much he is either going to get fat or naughty, you will have to do him every day morning and night, and pay someone to do him if you cant, you will also have to put him on livery when you go on holiday, (more money) the facilities are not as good, you will have to be up at certain times etc etc etc I would say leave him on livery.

I went through this myself when I moved out, but to me, DIY is stress and as expensive (and more time consuming) than part livery. Having done it both ways, I would not go back to DIY unless I had kids (in which case I would make them do their own ponies!)
 
Is £260 alot for livery in the uk? im paying €350 per month per horse and that doesnt include anything like shoeing worming etc!!I think thats probably about £240.I could probably buy a really nice house for the amount of livery i pay!!

This is the figrues for the month

Livery = £50 per week
Shoes = £7.50 per week
Wormer = £3.00 per week
total £60.50 per week

You see some peole wornt paying up for there shoes and wormers etc, so they avergae the shoes and wormer out over the whole year and then divuded it by 12, if you no what i mean?>
 
I t has only gone up to that as of January, the thing is my horse is 17h, he gets the same feed hay and size stable as two 16.3 on our yard but there livery is cheaper then mine by £40, i really want to ask the YO why but we are realy good friends and i dont want to fall out about it..
 
I have my horse at my house and wouldn't want it any other way. I love looking after him, it is part of the horse owning expericence. I know a few people who have changed from full to DIY and would never go back as they feel closer to their horse now. But if you are happy where you are, why change...
