Hi. I could really do with some advice I have a 15hh tb x cob, I've owned her 2 years and we don't seem to be getting anywhere :( she is 6 now but I get the impression she was never broken properly. Anyway we were having weekly lessons which were sometimes good but cantering is a major problem Que. lots of napping/bucking, she has never been to bad to hack although very nappy on her own but I can generally ride through that, but the last 2 weeks have been a nightmAre as soon as anything comes from behind (cars today) and horses running around in fields she goes crazy and bucks but we are talking big bucks that I can sit to, so I end up having to get off and lead but she still wasn't any better with me on foot. So just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I could do or if experienced similar? I was thinking maybe some natural horsemanship??

At the end of my tether - today became dangerous :(

Oh poor you, that doesn't sound like fun!

What is she being fed and is she getting turn out?

Have you had her back/teeth/saddle looked at recently? Also have you spoken to a vet as could be a 'female' issue?

Hi NatalieS, really sorry to hear it. What does your instructor think? If they are any good they should have some suggestions. Pick their brains asap. Best to make sure tack fits ok. Is she feeling fresh and having limited turnout/work and poss more high energy feed (short feed and haylage) to account for her behaviour out hacking? Can you hack in sensible company on quiet routes initially. Try and keep within your comfort zone for a while and reassess rather than set yourselves up for a difficult time on over-excited hacks. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies - she is turned out from about 6.30 until 3 ish everyday and she only has some happy hoof in the morning with her oestress which she has all year round. I went out in company yesterday and last weekend with my partner walking but it doesn't seem to make any difference :( teeth checked just before Xmas, back checked and saddle. She just seems to get so over excited and her reaction is to buck as high as possible which isn't funny especially on the road. I really don't want to give up and I had hoped we would be out at some shows this year but until this is sorted there is no hope :( I was thinking of getting someone to re-back her and start from scratch ?

2 years? It sounds to me like you need a change of instructor to someone who will sit on her and find out what is going on and then work with both of you to sort it out.

Only been having lessons for about 8 months but every week, spent the first year just getting to know her and building a bond, sadly my instructor had a nasty fall last year so she doesn't really want to get on her but my confidence is shot at the moment :( it's so frustrating she is so good to handle but ridden work is a nightmare. Would it be an idea to send her off to a professional?

How experienced are you? If it were me I'd like someone more competent than myself ride her (school & hack) a few times to see how she works for them. How is she hacking out with a grounded and sensible horse companion?

I've been riding since I was about 7 now 30!! And I have always been fairly confident but that has changed with these problems, I went out yesterday with an older horse who is fairly sensible but does tend to jog home but Darcie doesn't normally worry about that she is quite happy to plod on behind but even on the main roads with company she seems to be getting in a state, kicked out at 2 cars yesterday and span round. The napping I can just about ride through with lots of shouting and using the whip ( which also makes her buck) It's a vicious circle!!

I'm 31 and have been riding since I was 5...however I'm not sure I'd have the knowledge or experience to deal with this myself! No wonder your confidence is low as having to deal with that on the roads is very stressful. I would want someone experienced to ride her, if your instructor won't get a recommendation of someone who will. Although she won't get on and ride what has she said about her? After 8 months of weekly lessons I would want to see some kind of improvement/change in behaviour as they aren't cheap!
