Hi Im Looking for some Advice I have moved my pony today and he is now living out with a donkey, We turned him out today and he absolutely hated him! He Was chasing the donkey around and squealing 🙈 so I had to bring him in and he was quite wound up, I know donkeys give off scents and he might not be used to it but any tips or ideas to get him used to him please, He isnt the best with moving and gets quite wound up! So i have given him some calmer and will give it to him through the week but once hes settled hes a lovely boy and very chill Just need to get him used to the donkey!..

Donkeys ideally should be with other donkeys. My ponies were initially terrified of my donkeys. Once put in the field the donkeys were bullied by the ponies so separated them permanently.
To be honest i think its not fair on either of them.
The donkey is used to ponies! We have Just moved in and the girl before kept her 3 with them sadly his donkey friend died so he's always lived with ponies, the donkey just does his own thing it's my pony who needs to get used to him 🙈 x

Mine are next door to 3 donkeys and it took a while for everyone to settle. Neighbouring paddocks might help?
We only have one field so it's quite tricky! I Might try splitting it, I've put them in stables near eachother so he can get used to him but far away enough they can have space and he has chilled out a bit now so hoping tomorrow they are okay!

I have kept up to 4 donkeys with my horses for many years, with great success. But I would never recommend a single donkey, even if kept with a horse or horses two is far kinder. Without fail even the most knee trembling giant of a horse overcame their abject horror and fear of living with galloping shouty donkeys very quickly. Plus my donkeys have been super helpful in keeping a horse company when another horse is taken out of the field for any reason.

I no longer have any horses and only two donkeys but my home will always have donkeys on it, they are just ace. ;)

He's always lived with ponies by himself! He does his own thing and isnt bothered by them and hes very quiet, it's my pony that needs to get used to him 😂 they should get along but it's all a shock to him I think 🤣

As a child, I rode/helped at a riding school that had a donkey living with the ponies. I believe he was a rescue. One of the larger, older, cob mares was pair bonded with him and he was quite happy. Sorry, no help to you op but just to comment that a donkey can live happily with ponies. The ponies were stalled during their working days and ‘Jacko’ was tethered with ‘M’Lady’.

As Haniki, one of my donkeys in particular bonded with firstly my big 16.2 Suffolk punchX gelding, donkey was only 6 months old and they were plastered to each other from day one until my old horse was PTS when donkey was 15. Donkey then immediately latched onto one of my mares and they were also inseparable until she was PTS just a couple of months ago. It didn't matter what other horses or donkeys were in with him and his chosen horse, the horse was always preferable to another donkey. Although he has now settled with his long term donkey field companion he does show signs of missing a big horse protector but another horse won't be happening now sadly.

We kept a donkey and a welsh cob together for a few years. Just the two of them.

They were the absolute best of friends and despite the cob being in his late 20's, they would play together like a pair of colts.

Sometimes another pony would be turned out with the pair of them if a friend needed the grazing. The donkey and the cob would snub any new pony every time, much preferring the company of each other.

They will settle down. Just fence them off from each other until they settle. Then when you do put them back in together, maybe do so after the pony has been for a long ride so he just wants to eat.

Are they noisy? I would like a pair but I’m worried about hacking off the neighbours

Well they can be to be honest. Now we have them up at the house rather than down the track when I still had horses. Bertie my older chap does shout when we are in the garden, but if one of us goes over and gives him a scratch and a few nuggets he shuts up again.

Our neighbours are far enough away for it not to be a problem thankfully.

Sorry I didn't update! It's been over a month now since we moved my pony in with the donkey and they are the best of pals!! They share food together, Groom eachother, both get in the field shelter. Together 🤣 they are literally inseparable it's the best outcome 🥰
Amazing!
