We have a 4-5month cocker pup fed on raw meat/bones diet. We are happy with the diet but the only concern is unless he eats in one go raw chicken can be dragged around floor or left in bowl. Being a pup he can also tend to try and lick us after eating.

Does anyone know the human risks or salmonela(sp) contamination to humans if there is traces left on dog faces, then being dragged around floor and possibly licking a person.

Also cat has decided she quite likes a lick of raw chicken, then goes to lie on our bed!!

As mentioned we are happy with the diet but not if we have a high risk of salmonela poisioning.

thanks a lot x

Well I have fed raw for decades..it has never affected me whatsoever.Feed them outside if it worries you.Actually exposing yourself to various bugs is a very good thing,it strengthens your immune system, that is why kids should be allowed to play with animals and get mucky.

The risk of salmonella is actually very low - as East Kent said better to build your immune system. The media hype around things like salmonella has blown the real risk out of all proportion and the stirct hygiene laws in this country acutally do us no favours by reducing our exposure to perfect harmless bacteria and reucing our immunity:o

Nah,was a mucky kid anyway",helping " milk a Jersey herd as a kid..came home caked in mud and cow sh.. ,great healing abilities ,me.With the dogs..well elbow deep in ox tripe, used to mince our own whole ones..smell lingers a bit..so that next sandwich has special qualities :D. I have no allergies, can put my mits in industrial strength bleach and no ill effects, building up your own resistence is easy and every kid should be exposed to muck as I was. Do you see gypsy kids with asthma or allergies?/ Never!
Jeez these cleanliness freaks do my head in :(

I feed outside and watch them to make sure they're both eating their own.

It's 10 minutes out of my day - but I don't mind. I drink my coffee while watching them.

For the first two weeks of Raw, mine ate chicken exclusively as it was the easiest to digest and crunch at first but now we're established, I've stopped feeding chicken as I can't be certain if it's enhanced with saline or not and I suspect it of causing itching in my Inuit.

My old girl has two chicken feet a day, but that's all.

If you're worried about licking - then wipe his mush with a cloth when he's finished.
