I have a TB mare that I bought as a project and she is now ready for selling. What do you think of my advert and if any of you wish to advise on what you would pay for her then that would be fab. This is the first time I have ever done this and I have fallen for her but unfortunately she just isn't the right one for me as she is realistically too small and I having had my heart set on buying a show cob can't afford two horses.

I will also try and add a couple of pictures on which are the ones I am thinking of using in the advert

Woolacoombe Dream
‘Darcy’

Very pretty 15.1hh Bay Thoroughbred Mare rising 6.

Darcy is proving to be very trainable on the flat and is showing promise over coloured fences. She will happily hack out alone or in company on bridleways and roads.

Current livery yard manager has said she is a pleasure to have on the yard. She is good to shoe, box and clip. Can be turned out on own or in company, she has also been turned out in a mixed group.

Darcy is now looking for a new home to progress her training further. She is Weatherby’s registered and eligible for the ‘Retraining of Racehorse’ classes.

A very sad sale so a good home is of utmost importance.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I would leave out the bit about the YO. Has she been anywhere and done anything? She is quite small which will probably limit the people who are interested but I don't know about price. Unless she can show aptitude for something I can't see you will get a huge amount.

i'd say about £3k max based on what your ad says

however if it said something along the lines of 'flatwork at prelim standard & comfortably jumping a 75cm course of sj' i would go higher , which she may well be but 'trainable on the flat & showing promise over coloured fences' could be construed to mean ' needs training on the flat & has hurtled over a couple of coloured fences!'

£900 tops I'd say.

She sounds nice but my eyebrows would be raised by your comment about what the "current livery yard manager" has to say. This almost implies that other YM haven't agreed....

Thanks. I will take the bit out about current YO as I have been on 2 yards with her and everyone has loved her. I just wanted to highlight the fact she is an easy horse to have around.

I am suprised about the quote for £900 as that is little over what I paid for her and she hadn't done anything at that point except been in training and raced on the flat 3 times (too slow!) I am hoping to get a little more than that.

I would say she is Prelim level and would do a good test at Prelim. My friend does the jumping and she is calmly doing grids of about 2ft 3. I will put this detail in the advert rather than what I have currently

I think its crazy at how prices vary on horses. I have seen similar horses to her advertised for over 4k. Now I would def not put her in that price bracket.

She sounds lovely - my exrcaers are of similar level and I would expect £2000-£2500 if I were selling either of them, though they are a bit bigger.

I really like the sound of her and exactly the age and height I am looking for, just wish I was in the position to buy

I would pay up to £2000 maybe a bit more for her.

Just wish I was in a position to buy!! If I could afford her I'd hand over £2000 without even blinking I think, and I havent even seen a pic yet!! Lol!

Yep sorry, but as you say, you paid slightly less than this figure for her, you can see how I am in the right ballpark for a project horse. It would make a lot of difference if you had lightly competed her, but she just sounds like she has just started her training therefore until that is complete you sadly won't get a whole lot more than you paid for her.

This is why, unless you are a committed competition rider willing to take the horse up the ranks, you really won't make a vast profit on an ex-racer.

I hope I am wrong and you do make more, but I honestly can't see it. If she were mine, I'd advertise her for somewhere between £1,200 and £1,750 and see what sort of response you get; of course you can advertise her for whatever you like; the proof is always in the pudding and correct pricing is the most important part of selling horses.

Very best of luck.

there are loads of TBs for sale all the time. I paid only slightly more than that for mine and he is bigger and has won money SJ & eventing although he was 11 and is a cribber which probably affected the price. At tia says while she only "shows" promise and needs further education she does not appear to be worth much more than one fresh off the track. After all the level of person required to continue training her could just buy a project and do it all themselves

Oh crumbs there are absolutely tonnes of ex-racers and I personally don't know anyone who has paid a penny for one, however the going price for those who don't know where to source the freebies, is around £600 - £900.

Well I think a horse thats been schooled from the track to be doing a nice prelim test - I'd assume this means working in a nice balanced outline in all 3 paces - and progressing well with jumping is worth at least £2000. That has all the basics established for somebody who is ready to start doing some more, adding complexity and competing, and is still cheap enough to buy and make a nice profit on in under a year simply by getting out competing if thats what they choose to do.

I know personally I would quite happily pay more for something with good basics established and shown to have a good attitude than buying something dirt cheap and having to start from scratch.

If only I came across horses like her for £1,200!!

Sorry, I need to clarify here though - I didn't mean that the seller would GET £1,200, just that they could advertise at this price and take £900. The actual price that the horse sells for is generally not the advertised price.

Just to disagree with you Tia, we sold two really nice ex-racers this summer, neither of which had competed. One was pin-fired and a bit naughty plus had never jumped. He went easily for 2.5k. The other showed a lot of potential in his jump but was still a bit green. He went for 4.5k. They were 5 and 6 respectively.

But the advert didn't say that the horse was competing prelim tests....did it? I must have missed that bit.

Yeah I know you didn't mean that Tia, just saying would be nice to find something like that in that price region that is sane to ride and not old, as the majority of people seem to be pricing very high right now that was all.

How much did you pay for your recent ex-racer Boss?

I know how much I pay for my horses and I know how much I sell them for - the two are not comparable, and I expect neither are yours.

I don't know when you are planning to sell her but I wouldn't bother before Christmas. If she is only 15.1 then this will very much go against her as a TB would be too small for most adults but too big for pony classes. I would advertise her after xmas for £1500 and see what happens.

The fact she hasn't actually competed doesn't make much difference in my opinion - it is the fact she has good flatwork established which will enable whoever buys her to progress quickly with her training. If she had competed with good results at that level I would venture to say she'd be worth more like £2500.

The two we sold over the summer were bought for £800 each
Mine was a bit less than that, I'd have bought one from the sales for less but I liked the fact this horse had a more reliable history behind him!! I will aim to sell him in the summer for 2.5k. More if he takes to eventing.

Yes that's what I would have expected - can't imagine a producer/dealer paying much more.

Out of interest were yours as small as 15.1hh?

Good point, they were both 15.3 and geldings. That helps a lot!!
