Advice on box rest!!

Bit of a misleading title I suppose, but my TB mare had a foot puncture at the weekend which burst out through her heel yesterday. Obviously want to keep it clean and poulticed for the next few days, but my normal trick with the horsehage bag and lots of duck tape on foot doesn't seem to be working this time and she came in with hole in bag.

She is used to going out every day in the field approx 9am-6pm. Should I keep her in for the next few days to give her foot a change to heal, or is there any poultice boot which will stay on in the field.

She will have to stay in on Saturday all day anyway as our other horse is eventing, so could keep her in Thurs/Fri/Sat and reassess on Sunday.

Everywhere is just muddy at the moment because of all the rain this week.

Sorry forgot to say that vet allows me to hack her out if she is sound, so I could hack her Thurs/Fri evening which would allay the boredom somewhat.

There is a tiny field beside the house that the other mare could go in, so they won't be too far away from each other??

Any suggestions?

My boy has just had an abscess which took 8 weeks (!) to appear. For this duration, he was turned out with a Hoofeeze boot on (as recommended on this forum) cost £40, telephoned the company and it arrived the next day. I put a nappy over his foot and put the boot ontop of it - its fantastic, and is really easy to fit with velcro straps and no nasty metal hooks. Would highly recommend and mine lasted the duration. Looks like a fab product, and you have really tested it out if used for 8 weeks!!!
I think I will go for this, though she may still have to stand in until it arrives. At leaast I could use it next week in the field if the puncture was still open.

If you ring her and then pay online, she'll post one out and you'll prob have it by Friday morning, loads of people on this forum raved about the boot and I have been impressed with mine, it gets a little damp inside I guess with moisture from the foot etc but if you put a pad or a nappy in there it keeps it clean and dry, try to get the right size as that makes it a much better fit and will last longer - good luck and hope she's on the mend soon.

Just one more quick question if you don't mind??

I have just been out and measured her up. Her foot is 130 across and 140 back to front, which equals their small fitting. Was thinking though that maybe the measurements they give are the outside measurements, so I would need the medium to fit her foot and poss a nappy or fybagee inside!

mine was turned out for 2 days with a hoofeze boot on before it died.... the bottom literally fell out. I was fairly peeved as it wasn't cheap!
and it fitted him well, but just didn't seem secure.
So not a glowing review here sorry...
I would nearly keep her in for two days to give it a chance to heal, although I always try and chuck out they tend to make holes in the poultice! What about tarp over the foot? might be a bit slippy..

MMMmm not sure, I'd ive them a ring and ask their advice, my boy had a large as medium was too small and it gives enough room for putting a nappy on but the best person to ask is the lady who works there, she's very helpful. I now keep mine as part of my first aid kit as will be useful if throws a shoe etc. They are not specifically designed to turnout in but I did and it held up ok but sure would last lot longer if only used in stable!
