I would like to get my own horse when I leave college in a year. I am 17 years old now and have been riding since I was 5. I've always wanted a horse of my own who I can really bond with and love.

I don't know that much about different breeds of horses. I currently ride a 15.3hh Irish Sports horse who I get on with really well. I enjoy all aspects of riding but mainly hack out. However if I get my own horse I would like to compete in dressage and show jumping as well as hacking.

Do you have any recommendations of what breed of horse would suit me? I am an experienced rider but not super confident and don't enjoy horses that are very sharp and unpredictable. I am used to forward going horses, but I don't mind having to use my legs and I'm up for a challenge!

Oh and I'm 5ft11 but slim, and weigh around 9-10 stone.

I find that even now, 40+ years later, I still feel most comfortable on the type of horse I rode at the RS where I learned to ride -cobby types in my case - and my sister says the same - she always rode show pony types. So you're probably best looking at ISHs, which should be able to do the job you're thinking of.

I'd reccomend an ISh or an RID-they're great in the brain, they'll look after you and depending on the amount of tb in them you can event-they have powerful jumps regardless of tb % and you can compete on them and have some fun. Also you should come over to Ireland to get one!!!! ;D ;D

Irish Sports or Irish Draught as already suggested. I would also suggest not having prejudice against a particular breed but trying any that meet your specification.

i have had tb's, idx's and i now have a german wb, and i have to say the wb is my fave out of all of these. he is genuine, gentle, intelligent, willing to please and has a great personality. he is not sharp at all, just a great fun horse who of course is fab at dressage! im looking for another horse at the me and i would love another wb, so thats my advice!
good luck
