After looking up and reading into snaffle bits i've decided to change my boy into a french link or lozenge one to stop this 'nutcracker' action as i think this is what he resists sometimes and also to be kinder on his mouth.

Any advice on whether to get french link or lozenge....is there much difference?
Any is it ok just to change it and see what happens? That one might be a silly question!

A french link is a thin plate, that has the major drawback of flopping around, which can often annoy many horses

Lozenges are quieter in the mouth, but depending on how they are designed, they can also create tongue pressure (for example a ball joint)

When trying a new bit treat them normally, you will probably always get a temporary improvement due to fresh area / feeling on the bars, so important to judge a bit on more than one outing.

Would either of these bits help with chewing the bit or is that just down to schooling?
I'd love to get him out of a grackle as well as i'm not convinced he needs it....so many things to learn!

loosening grackles gradually over a few weeks to the point where he either starts messing about (in which case it was helping) or where it is no longer doing anything can give you an idea.
my lad likes quite a loose grackle (to the extent that you'd think it would have no effect) but if i swap all together his mouth is all over the place again
