Advice on Cushings skin conditions please

Having successfully coped with Cushings for 4 years now, I find that our pony is now developing itchy dandruffy patches. She was successfully treated for grass mites earlier in the year, but this not the same.

I know that cushinoid horses do develop skin problems and wonder if anyone else has any experience and how they treated it?

She is on pergolide, brewers yeast and will shortly be started on micronised linseed.

Hi,
I have a 9 year old with Cushings...on Pergoliyde (Prascend now) and he got itchy and flakey.
Washed him in Naff Tea Tree oil which got rid of the itching and flakey skin, and he regularly now has hot flannel baths with just a squirt in the water.
I also started him on Naff Cushinaze.....and that also seems to have a positive impact.
PS I don't work for Naff!!!! LOL

pergolide and its equivalent can cause itchy skin
i take any of our rescues off pergolide and use the hilton herbs cush x
perglide and its equivalent has loads of side effects which people arent told about.

i have a 24yr mini who came to me on pergolide (been on it for years) now on herbal supp and looks 100 times better.
gallps around paddock and thoroughly enjoying life.

i clip her several times a year and wash with teatree shampoo keeps her skin in great condition.
there skin is greasy with cushings and this is the cause of excess skin

I would also reccomend using Oilatum after you bath as it helps to soften the skin. Just follow the instructions on the bottle for dilutions. We have used it on ours for ages and helps to get rid of the flakyness (If that is a word...) along with tea tree. I second clipping as well as it allows the skin to breathe!

Aloe Vera is also great for skin irritations/complaints. Get a product though with high content/quality of Aloe, as not all products are same!

Thank you all for your suggestions, I shall be trying them all to see what works for her. However I am rather loath to take her off Prascend as last time we tried to lower the dose and use monks pepper (agnus casti) she started with laminitis, which was the first sign she had cushings 4 years ago. She is happy, shiny and bouncy so I wont rock the boat!
