Can anyone help me please?
My horse is on the mend after a bout of tying up and is currently having a scoop of alfa-a oil for breakfast and tea with Global Herbs Globalvite supplement (for Vit E and Selenium). She's going right off the Alpha-a oil and I want to try something else, not because she needs feeding particularly as she's on box rest with 1 hour turnout per day, but so that I can get the supplements into her.

I've bought a bag of Baileys Outshine, but their advice line is only open on weekdays - would it be ok to feed a small amount of Outshine with some alpha-a oil, or is that overdoing the oil? As the Outshine has Vit E and selenium in it, do we need to continue with the supplement as I don't want to overdose on selenium?

I'll give Baileys a call on Monday to ask their advice, but can anyone offer any in the meantime?

My horse had a bad tying up episode 3 years ago and as she is not a good doer and needed condition I used Saracen Releve, which is specially formulated for horses with ERS. I also feed Alfa Beet. The combination has worked a treat and she has never tyed up since. It's yummy too. (So she tells me)

I've used Dodson and Horrell ERS pellets in the past, these again are specially formulated for ERS and you shouldn't need to give additional selenium and vit E - may be worth giving their advice line a ring too.

Thanks Popsicle & Marnie.

Our local saddlery shops don't stock Re-leve, I asked them first - can you get it online?

What sort of energy levels does Re-leve and D&H pellets give, I don't want her to go doolally, but still have enough energy to work?

It is not usually the energy (calorie) level that sends a horse doolally, more the starch and sugar levels. Both Releve and D&H ERS pellets are high in digestible energy (calories) - D&H ERS pellets have a 'calorie count' of 13.5 MJDE/kg, whilst Releve has 13.1 MJDE/kg. Neither has high starch levels, but from memory I think the ERS pellets are lower in starch than the Releve, but suggest you check with manufacturers to be sure. Outshine is a very concentrated in calories with a digestible energy value of 24 MJDE/kg.
