Hi Everyone,

I am new so this is my first post!

Just wondered if anyone has any ideas on how to keep my youngster in his field! I am now getting desperate and have even considered selling him because of it. He is about 14'1 now and 18 months old and thinks it is great fun to jump his 4' electric fencing for fun!! Luckily the fencing is within a field but the outer boundary fencing leaves alot to be desired! I know he was bred to jump (by Orlando out of welsh mare) but just didnt think he would start quite so young!

If anyone has had this experience and can tell me he will grow out of it that would be great

My mare will jump out if she does not like where she is, I have never managed to stop her, but luckily she has only chosen to jump out for better grazing or to go in her stable when it's raining. All my fences have been well over 4 foot

.

She has got a bit better now at 12 but will still do it sometimes

is there no-where you could move him with 'un-jumpable' fencing such as really really high hedgerows/trees etc? someone suggested on here to tie scary things like bin liners on to the fence.

also what about making the elec fencing very wide, so do 3 fences inside each other about a metre apart.

other than that i'm out of ideas unfortunately, but if he just jumps into somewhere he can't get out of at all, is it possible to just let him?

welcome to the forum

I know what you are going through!!!
My friend has a three year old who all summer thought it was a great game to be in a totally different field than the one you left her in the night before or standing at the gate waiting for you!!!! We are lucky where the yard is as its miles away from any roads and there are large walls round the boundaries.
It got to the stage were you would put her back into her own field and before you were back at the stables she was behind you!!!
We tried different types of electric fencing and chargers - it made no difference - she either jumped it or walked straight through it!! She always had company in the fields and this made no difference either!
We put it down to her being bored as she used to come and watch us ride in the menage!!!
She is at the min away being lightly broken - she's about 16.1 @ the min and built like a tank!
We are hoping that this will help her and that she will grow out of it!!!
Fingers crossed!!!
Good luck with yours

Is your youngster on its own? If so maybe they require some company. My horse used to jump out when he was left on his own and horses would ride past he would happily join them

No my boy has a field companion and horses in the next field but he doesnt bother jumping in with them he goes the other way. Sounds like I will have to learn to live with it, Oh well that will teach me to buy a potential future show jumper! Love him to bits though.

my horse did this too...and i still don't know a decent way..something that did help though was when she got a shock from the fence..really quite harsh but it certainly made her think twice about going near the fence again!
but good luck!

My old horse used to do this, we ended up makeing the fence nearly 8ft all the way round and havinf two runs of it so it was wide aswell. He only used to go back to his stable and stand there to be let in lol

hi there was just readibg your info about your horse about him jumping out of his field. i have had this anoying experience with a horse and i couldnt get him to stay put for more than an hour before he was bouncing field boundaries.i tried in vain all tactics electris fencing.post and rail to with bright bags on.finally a last resort i used a liverys older horse who he got a bond with and he never left the field again.or less i was bringing him in again.
maybe try and put him out with a companion.or leave him boxed for longer so hes pleased to be out.if he starts jumping otu again then bring him back in and leave him in till next day.he will learn in time if hes good he stays out if hes bad he gets diciplined by going to box.just an idea 4 u.hope it sorts itself out soon

At least your horse jumps the fence unlike a pony i used to own, like you we had electrical fencing within the field but he used to climb through it! We had a very small section with which was not live, and he used to stick his head through and climb under and lift it up with his neck or back and get through that way and the fence was no bigger than normal he was only about 12hh aswell.......welshy so think that explains it haha, the little swine. So yeah totaly irrelevant, but IMO i would try 3/4 fences with a meter or so in between them he may be put off by it, or put an object he may be scared of next to it (if it is the same place he jumps out of each time) you also mentioned he has companions, why not try him on his own, his own section in the same field worth a try i guess. If not fingers crossed he will grow out of it, good luck

I feel for you as I have the same problem. One who jumps over and one who goes under or through!

Electric fence is now 4ft 6", with 3 strands of poly rope. In the summer I ran another strip about 2ft inside that at about 2ft 6" high. That stopped the jumper, but not the naughty pone who climbs under, rolls under or just runs through it.

The extra line doesn't work at this time of the year using plastic posts as they just blow over in the strong winds, though the 'jumper' doesn't seem keen on jumping at this time of year.

Escape artist pony still getting through fence though, even though he's been kicked by the horse next door.
