I am going to get a field shelter built. I am thinking of actually building it with brick rather than wood. I need it large enough for a large pony and a shetland, however would want to make sure it is big enough should I ever buy a bigger pony for my girls. What are the ideal dimensions for a horse shelter? I am also not sure if I want to concrete the floor, or would I have to concrete the floor if buidling from brick? If so is concrete better as flooring or is it better to keep the floor natural and in which case build in wood.

As you can see not sure where to start!!! Any advice welcome. Thanks

Haven't a clue about size etc. but you are likely to need planning permission (if you haven't already got it) for a permanent structure. You don't want to build it and then have to demolish.

I guess you would want something 12x16 ish - maybe more 14x16 to accommodate something bigger. I built one last year 14x16.
What I will say though is building your own (properly) doesn't really work out much cheaper than buying one. Mine was wooden though so not sure about brick.

It is not so much for it to be cheaper, weighing up the pros and cons thought a brick one would be better. This is why I need advice as what to do.......

Which ever you go for, wood or brick, i would have a concrete floor. It makes life so much easier. I have brick shelters in my fields, they used to be rifle ranges. They're obviously very sturdy and don't bend or break when the horses rub on them. I think you would want a minimum of 16x12.

That was the kind of size that I was thinking. What about height? Also was thinking of the concrete floor being larger than the field shelter.
