Sorry for the long post but I’m worried about my horses leg and not sure if I should get a different vet out for advice.
My horse cut his hock almost a month ago on the point of hock we believe from a kick and it wasn’t discovered untill the next day so was too late to stitch. Since then he has been on box rest with a full leg bandage and had two lots of strong antibiotcs and bute. My horse started to get very hot and swollen on the inside of his leg where the bone sticks out which is assume is a pressure sore starting. I asked my vets to come out on Friday and they said they were too busy and had to cancel my call out. But said to keep it bandages and to put some cotton wool wedges to ease the pressure but he walks loads in his stables and loves to lay down and everything slips on him. My vet also told me to clean it with hibi everyday and hasn’t given me anything to go on it untill it’s healed over where I would have cleaned it with something like salt water and used manuka honey but I am no vet.

I’m worried the bandage is causing more problems then the cut now. I stuck on a bandage and a nappy in the day to relive the pressure and put a pressage bandage on over night and icing where this pressure sore is. This is again just assuming it’s a pressure sore I sent photos to my vets who thinks it’s that but they never came out because they had to cancel the appointment.

I have been icing it twice a day. But he’s a 3 year old on box rest who box walks and is disgusting in the stable and likes to lay in all his poo and wee. I think his stable is less clean than if I made him a tiny paddock in his field full of grass but I’m trying to do exactly what the vet wants me to. I just don’t know if I can full bandage like they want I think it’s causing more damage then the cut now. Any advice is really welcome thank you do you think I should get a second opinion I don’t want to step on my vets feet she has been really lovely to me.

Is his temperature raised from normal?
Is he breathing normally or is his respiration fast and shallow?
Is the swelling spreading?

If the answer to any of these is yes, get a vet out today. Trust your instinct.

FWIW, I wouldn't be using hibiscrub on a healing wound. Saline solution is my go to, but I'm not a vet.

No it’s not infection and the actual hock joint is not swollen or hot it’s on the inside of the leg from the bandage likely being too tight form slipping no where near the cut. He’s fine trying to chew on everything in sight ?

Does it really still bandaging I would be leaving it off I think if it's causing a sore.

I wouldn't hibiscrub it either it's far too harsh for a wound and can actually hinder healing, tbh the vet sounds a bit rubbish to be recommending using it and cancelling appointments, I think I would be considering anew vet.

My horse developed a pressure sore from a bandage the vet insisted stayed on. It resulted in an infection and emergency call out, antibiotics etc. I'd be very careful in future. Also, hibi is not recommended for wounds these days, because it can damage healthy tissue and slow healing. I'd change vets or pay for a second opinion.
