As title

We have just moved our horses - 16 year old tb and 8 month old youngster

both were wormed 12.10.11 tb with equest promax and youngster with equimax

Do a worm count and Sellotape test (pin worms dont always show in routine counts) and see if they need worming, check with your vet ours does the counts for us but there are labs like abbey and westgate

We are having problems in this country due to overuse of wormers and drug resistance by worms.
 
thanks for you reply and at the risk of being daft - how do i do a worm count and the sellotape test. how much is a test generally ??

do they take a long time x

You can either get a worm kit from one of the labs or just take a poo sample and get it tested. The labs do a postal service - our vet does it for a small cost. All you need is some fresh poo and something like a small bag or pot that can be sealed.

I suggest the Sellotape test as we have had problems with pinworms and even while out today I've seen other horses droppings full of worms!!! It makes me despair! It is easy, take a bit of Sellotape, pad it round the anus and then seal with another bit of tape, the pinworms lay eggs in this area outside the body - they then put under a microscope to see if you have them or not. this may help http://www.abbeydiagnostics.co.uk/pricelist.htm I do not have any connection with them in any way!!

If you give your vet a call they should be able to advise you - ours is great but we have a great relationship with the practice and even find their wormers cheaper than buying elsewhere, also if we have a problem, they are the ones who have recommended them - I like traceable liability.
