Hi All

Just looking for a bit of advice on how/where to find a sharer for my horse. I owned my mare with a friend but due to child commitments I have had to buy her out and I am now pregnant so need to find a sharer! I have put ads in local tack shops and on horseshare UK and equine adverts - are there any other websites that are good?

Also what is the right financial contribution to ask for? What are people willing to pay for a good horse that is on full/part livery, they will be able to ride when they want and take out and compete? I was thinking around £200pm as my livery is over double this and by the time shoeing, insurance and vets bills are added it really adds up as I am sure you will all know!! Is this unrealistic?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Thanks

I used to pay £60 through summer, £80 through winter pcm. Most people I know is around this mark.

Perhaps loan makes more sense with that kind of an expense? Or the option to have her on DIY livery, full loan on same yard?

Try advertising on Preloved too, there are quite a few 'horse wanted on share' adverts there so you might actually be able to find someone without even advertising.

I am currently sharing a 16.1hh, 13 year old IDXTB, he is on assisted DIY livery at a great yard with lovely facilities and I pay £110 pcm plus £32.50 every 6 weeks for his shoes. I have him 4 days a week, and have the option to compete him if I want. I do chores as well on my 4 days. I dont think you will find anyone willing to pay £200 pcm to be honest, after all the horse is your responsibility and if you cant afford to keep him that is not the sharer's problem. Between £150 and £100 pcm (plus half of shoes on top) is more realistic.

At the end of the day the sharer is doing you a favour, they are helping you out so they are not going to want to pay through the teeth to help someone else out. For £200 pcm you are close to the sort of price you would pay per month when you own your on horse (albeit cheaply!) so why would someone want to share for £200 pcm when they could get their own for a little more? And if your argument is they dont have to do any chores because the horse is on full livery, well then all they would do is ride, and they would be better off having riding lessons as that is much cheaper than paying £200 per month!

With my current share horse I feel he is a bit expensive at £110 pcm, and unfortunately she has decided to sell him (now I've brought him on and done some intensive schooling with him) so all my hard work has gone to waste. I think you need to realise that the sharer is helping you out, and they shouldnt have to pay a small fortune every month for something that you could decide to sell at any time.

Good luck!

Agree try Preloved, local tack shops etc.

I also agree that you would be very hard pressed to find a sharer at £200 a month. At that price I would probably just buy my own, or have riding lessons. Whenever I have shared it has been around £60-£80 a month. I had one share that was £40 a month as it was a newly backed horse and I was doing the owner a favour bringing them on. I have been looking at shares in my area and the going rate is around £80-£100 a month, and I'm on the London/Herts border where a lot of horses seem to be on part/full livery.

Good luck finding a sharer, if you are not sure what to charge then have a look at other shares in your area.

im currently looking for a sharer for my cob too. they can ride when ever they want, and i will do all the mucking out and general husbandry. im asking for £20 per wk in winter and £15 per wk in summer, plus half of the shoes.

doubt you will find someone who will pay £200 a month to help you out! I pay £80 a month.
Sharers are sharers because they cant afford their own. I think splitting livery costs is a bit unrealistic because the horse is yours and you will get the say in most things. If I could afford £200 a month I would most likely to be able to afford my own. depending on area I think £10-£15 per day is the average

Sorry to hi-jack :-) but please could you give me the horse share web address as i'm thinking of looking for a sharer for one of mine, i've tried to find it but can only get a .com one with lots of Americans! might not be very convenient for them to come to Bucks!!!!

Thank you.

I am just getting my first sharer for my horse. I advertised on gumtree, and a local site - and on some equine facebook groups for my region. I had lots of teenagers but once I sorted the replies i got someone with a BSc Equine Studies who can school for me! I did not ask for any contribution as I think its my horse I should pay for it. I have done shares in past - and paid £150 a month, and had one that was free. To be honest I need someone to keep my horse fit so I would have had to pay someone to ride during winter for me, so its a great bonus that my horse gets extra love and attention and stays fit.

I have recently found a sharer for my horse while I'm pregnant and I think you may need to lower your price.
I charge £20 a week for 2 days, including a weekend day, more if wanted. Horse is on part livery so it's a case of muck out, groom and ride when suits you. He is safe as houses, a real happy hacker and we have 2 floodlit arenas and an XC field on site which he enjoys popping round. It is a drop in the ocean compared to what he costs me but I'd rather he got a great Aunty than covered more of the cost and I had to settle for anyone who coud pay.
I used a local website and was very clear about what I wanted - no novices and no under 18s.
