My mare is 5 months in foal. She is 16hh RID and I have put her to a 17hh RID stallion, and very much looking forward to the result. She has had two foals before I owned her. She had lameness for 18 months in off fore and I decided to turn her away for a year when the insurance ran out. She has just tweaked "that" leg again and was hopping lame last week but slowly improving.

Does anyone else have experience of lameness in in-foal mares and whether the extra weight will be a problem. I am worrying! But I've been doing that for 18 months and I don't think there is anything I can give her. She is a naughty girl and does ballet in the field occasionally. Any tips?

Are you positive it was the original injury and not pus in her foot?
Ours get that (our area is known for it), and it can be quite difficult to spot.
As she gets bigger she will move around less, and will stop looning about.
If it makes you feel any better we have had a lame brood mare for 15 years, she is better off slightly lame than dead in our opinion, and our vet agrees!
