My Pony has got lots of what I believe are lice eggs on the mane hair, mainly in her forelock and halfway down the mane. They are approx. 1mm long and yellowish. I've only seen the eggs not any lice. I don't even know how they look. I've put louse powder on mane, shoulders and tail. Does the powder get rid of lice or eggs or both? Can I do anything else? Has anyone any experience with that sort of problem? I would be gratefull for any advice.
Thanks
Linda

louse powder should get rid of the problem for you although you may need to repeat treatment, also you need to treat any rugs, stables or horses that your pony comes into contact with, regular and thorough grooming should remove lice and eggs once they are dead

Are they bright yellow? Are they stuck to the hair? If so then they are bot eggs and not lice.

If they are lice you need to repeat treatment in 7-10 days. If bots you need to get a bot knife from tack shop to scrape them off with, (or something similar although bot knifes work best). Bot eggs are bright yellow whereas lice are more a straw colour + if they're lice pony will either be itching or have sores on it from where it has rubbed itself.

Lice eggs look like flakes of dandruff. The lice themselves are about the size you describe and a pale brown in colour. Are they firmly attached to the hair?, they do sound more like bot eggs as Tia pointed out but it is very early to have bot flies about, they usually appear late rin the summer. If it is bot eggs my guess would be that you will also find them on the lower legs/fetlock.

Lice treatment, I would recommend louse powder and regular doses of Coopers fly repellant. Remember to re-apply in a couple of weeks to catch any newly hatched eggs. Also, isolate the horse, grooming kit etc. rugs need to be treated too.

Bot eggs just have to be picked off though I'm afraid.

Hope this helps

Unfortunately many of the available louse powders seem to have little effect on the lice, we've had to do some horses four times this year!
More effective is spraying with Deosan, which you dilute with water. This will knock 'em dead in one treatment.
Don't forget to also do your rugs and anywhere in the field they itch....
