Can anhone explain how to keep the horse out on the circle to stop him coming in because as i am lungeing he is making the circle smaller and smaller, thanks
Move back away from him to keep the line from dragging and point/poke the whip at his shoulder. Keep him moving round. I have to move continually to keep the line out to start with Ari, I reckon I work more than he does!
Use your body languague, ie make yourself bigger than him/her keeping your chest in line with the shoulder. Never move back from the horse but keep it on a smaller circle and use the stick as well and move in line with the horse without getting in front of the movement. Use the voice too, also start by leading around on a circle too.
TBH, I always puzzle about why people have problems with lunging. Today we had two fillies vetted - as part of their grading. Neither had EVER lunged before and within 2 minutes of starting, they were fine!!
Then I figured it out - it's the 'keeping level with shoulder' advice (which is generally correct with a TRAINED horse!) But with a horse that ISN'T trained to lunge properly, you need to keep nearly behind them (level with hip) and send them FORWARD!!
Keep walking towards the hip - hold the whip up (and give it a flick if necessary) - only let the lunge line come into play if horse is heading to far OUT on the circle.
I've found holding the whip out helps. I wish mine were easy to lunge. My boy knows exactly what he's doing and has been well trained to the point where he knows exactly what trick to try to get out of it (ie sharp turn & bombing off on the wrong rein or running in at me and bucking whilst doing so!!!) little monster!
