advice on my strong horse

hi guys, rite my horse taz is an absolute gentleman at home. i can move him all around me with the lightest touch, he responds and listens to me etc etc, however as soon as we leave home, his manners tend to disappear, for instance my friend lives up the road and she takes us to shows/lessons in her lorry so im up there with taz alot - as soon as hes up there he turns into mr im a half ton horse and ur a tiny person!pulls me around the yard, wont stand still etc and hes generally like this everywhere that isnt home. hes v laid back so dont think its excitement , just think he thinks he doesnt have to listen when we arnt at home. - its a big problem as hes 16;3 h. his old owners were scared of him and basically let him do wat he wanted on the ground - so i think it stems from there - have worked hard with him on the ground to establish manners but he only seems to use them at home! help!
 
I'd make sure I had either a chifney or normal bit in his mouth, depending on how strong he is. I'd also carry a show cane or similar for moving him around. I find that a little dig in the chest with one of those moves them back much easier than pushing with hands! Good luck

hi, thanks but i really dont want to start putting harsh bits in his mouth etc as he is only snaffle mouthed wen ridden - id really like to make him aware that he has to respect me on the ground wherever he is - the problem is is that he just doest listen at all goes in another world almost. - would rather do it somehow without a harsh bit etc esp as he is a gem at home
 
Yes - i would try a dually head collar too! Worked wonders with a bargy mare we had. She didn't do it at home either!! Perhaps you could borrow a school away from home and spend some time lead training her in there. We did this at local shows too. Took her along for the ride to keep another company and then we took it in turns to walk her around the showground etc.
 
My horse used to do this when I started taking him to pleasure rides off territory. We would have to trot up for the vet and he would cart me if I was not careful. I got the chiffney out and because he knows he cannot get away with murder in it he automatically behaves...so the bit is not harsh at all because it only works when it is used...otherwise it just hangs there in their mouths having no effect. It is not like a normal bit and cannot ruin a horse in any way whatsover so long as you know how and when to use it. I was taught by my instructor so know what I am doing with it.
I would much rather correct a horse once and them then to respect something and me than messing about with a potentially dangerous situation or keep pulling at them with head collars and trying to get them to listen...it is a bit like the child in the supermarket that is told not to touch something time and again but the child keeps going back because the 'threats' are never carried out...just my opinion though!
 
Have a look at Monty Roberts or Kelly Marks websites i think it give you linke on there!! We shopped around for ours but it did od the trick. You really do have to work at it though. Good luck!
