Three years ago I decided to put my mare to an international showjumper. I am a complete novice at this and she went off to stud to be covered by AI.

It was discovered that due to her age 16, she will not be able to take as the environment in her uterus was not quite right.

I have since tried to contact the stud to ask where that leaves me, as if i was to get another mare, would it be possible to transfer the NFFR? The stud fee was quite a lot and i would like to just get back a small portion of the fee!

As I said, this is all very new to me, so any advice would be very greatfully recieved!!

Thank you everyone! xx

Yes, though AI at the stud, only the once as the vet decided the chances of her taking were far too low, so she came home.

It was one of those things where I got really dissapointed and then concentrated on competing again... its only seeing the posts on breeding I thought I wonder where I now stand, and if anyone else had been or is in the same situation?

But usually it only provides for a free return covering in the following season. Some studs stipulate that it must also be the same mare, but most are flexible on that especially if your original mare proved infertile.

I'd be surprised if they were willing to give you a free return 3 years later, but worth a try.

I'm also slightly surprised that the stud didn't scan her prior to insemination and at that point discover that she was unlikely to take. The stud where my mare is currently were rigorous in scanning to check condition of the uterus, and when they discovered a slight build-up of fluid, treated her for any infection and sent off a sample for testing. Not until she was clear of fluid and they were quite sure that she was free of any minor infection did they go ahead with the breeding process.

Anyway, good luck, and hope that you might get at least some of your money back or a deal with another mare ....

I just cant believe that three years have passed so quickly, so will understand if the time is an issue! He is still up for the same amount in stud fee. Im just gutted, when i think back that i threw that money at them so easily!

As I said, I was completly new to all of this and thought NFFR was a great idea, not considering that it would be my mare that was unable to take. If i was to go this route again id try get written clarification of what happens should the mare not take, as transfering it to another mare seems a fair option (bet it was the easiest £800 that stud made that year!!)

I think they did scan, but only to see when she was due in season? I know they gave her oxitocin (sp) to clear the fluid prior to AI.

It has been a very expensive learning curve for me and I would have to be really confident of a positive outcome to ever try and breed again!
