First post after lurking a while! Sorry it could get long!

I got a lovely 14hh connemara mare in November 2020. she didnt quite arrive as described and had been out of work a while. She started showing discomfort when ridden a month or so after getting her, queried with previous owners and kept being told she just needs more work. Dont get me wrong she a fab little mare, no malice in her behaviour but obvious discomfort (bucking/refusing contact etc), shes perfect to do on the ground.

Over winter ive struggled to keep her weight off, never really thought much of it, after many TBs and poor doers it was quite a relief to be going through winter without having to spend a fortune in feed! Shes had saddle, teeth, back etc checked to rule those issues out.

About 4 weeks ago she really started getting worse and starting to avoid work alot more, with alot more bucking than usual. After a groom a couple of weeks ago I was really shocked to find she was producing quite a lot of milk. she was a bit puffy in front of her teats but no real bag. Ive had the vet out to make sure there was no infection, she said its definitely milk and could be pregnancy or hormone imbalance. Shes booked for a scan on Monday.

So I will know on Monday a little more of what we are dealing with, and not looking for anyone here to tell me if she is or isnt as I know thats impossible. Just opinions on how its looking, Ive attached videos of her last week showing the milk shes producing and of how she looks now in comparison to when she arrived, also a video of some movement seen around her flank, does it look like it could be foal movement or just me getting a bit ahead of myself!

I cant say id be over the moon if she was as it wasn't in my plans for this year, however I adore this mare and will be happy to go with it if we do have a baby on the way!

It's certainly possible! Congratulations!

One thing I would say is that I have never experienced bucking/evasion of contact because of pregnancy. We normally work our mares as normal for as long as possible and then continue gentle work bareback and long reining until they start to look like they can't be bothered any more. I've not ever seen a mare take a dislike to riding in these months. Mares tend to get on with it, so it could be worth using her time off, if she's pregnant, to really nail the groundwork - flexions and stretching, maybe some long reining, so that when you're ready to get back on her, she's essentially been through a "rehab" type of work and should be more comfortable in her work.

Thankyou! I definitely agree with regards to her behaviour when ridden. I’ve not had a foal for a long time but never really known a mare to be so difficult just because she’s in foal.

Although, it could very well be down to the fact she’s had no turnout since she came to me, last summer she was being produced on an event yard and doing amazing, so there's definitely something upsetting her. Working on groundwork is a great idea and something she could definitely benefit from as I have now stopped ridden work until I know whats going on. I'm guessing if she's not in foal and producing this milk then there could possibly be some hormone imbalance, I'm not sure if this can also affect their behaviour

How exciting, I know nothing about foal or no foal but if there is a foal do you have any idea who the sire could be?

No idea at all who the sire would have been!

Only a couple of days now until her scan. Not often I’m counting down the days to see the vet :D

Hi everyone, really sorry! I have tried to update a couple of times I've broken my phone so borrowing my daughters which is quite old until ive got mine fixed, Ive been getting the emails saying your asking for updates but had trouble getting on this site to reply for some reason, our pc was also in for repair last week so I've just not had chance to get on til this morning.

Lola did go for her scan, the vet just checked her manually and she definitely isn't in foal! He said its probably just the time of year for the milk production and to keep an eye on her. There is a blood test I can get for her to check hormone levels so I may end up doing that. We have started with some turnout this last week so I will see if this makes any difference in her behaviour when ridden.

Thanks for the advice I wasn't being ignorant, I've got 6 children as well so just been a crazy week!
