Hiya, we have been wanting to buy another Rottweiler puppy, and as we really wanted one that has been legally docked we have decided to buy from Ireland.

The trouble is that the top Rottweiler breeders in Ireland, and those which I consider to be a reliable and caring source just don't have puppies for sale. Because their puppies do so well in the show ring etc the litter is often already spoken for before they are born.

I do like to meet the litter and choose a puppy if possible, and this is important to me.

Anyone have any advice how to go about buying from a family home in Ireland, and how to avoid the pitfalls, or any recommendations.

Thank you.

All I can advise is to get your self on a waiting list, the fact that these pups are sold before they are born speaks volumes.

My Dobes were always docked pre ban and my last 2 are not, at first I didnt like the look of them but I do think they are better, they are very fast dogs and very agile and having a tail helps balance.

When you think of it horses used to be docked and now we think of it as cruel but not just because of losing their fly swatters but because their tails help with balance.

I think the right dog will be worth waiting for, get yourself on a list as mentioned.

Have you tried the Vorzeigen kennels, there is another user on here who was travelling over to buy with them, or Von Bel Mondo? The latter have tails but they are super quality dogs.

Absolutely, get on a list but nothing to stop you asking to be passed along if, for example, a puppy by their stud dog becomes available sooner.

Few breeders will let a buyer choose their puppy. They will allocate the one they feel fits best or you may get a choice of two.

Work it out.
Litter of eight;- breeder wants one so will hold two to pick from, someone else wants a show prospect so second pick so three reserved, someone wants a worker (high drive pup) which is usual picked out about 4 -5 weeks.
That is half the litter booked and if the genders are 50/50 there will only be two to choose from.
A breeder offering pick of litter to a pet home is a breeder who is producing puppies for the wrong reasons.
