Hiya,

My horse went suddenly hopping lame a couple of weeks ago with no obvious cause at all! Vet came, sedated him and literally inspected him head to toe. Eventually, after skinning all 4 legs, we found the worlds SMALLEST cut right under his fetlock (on the joint, in the feathers)

Long story short, this cut is at least 6 months old (before I got him) and would never have been found due to location and size. Poor ponio somehow managed to get an infection in it and the infection built and built until he couldn't cope anymore :( As you can imagine, I feel AWFUL!! I wish he had told me he was hurting earlier. Silly little trooper :(

Now, 2 weeks and LOTS of antibiotics later, ponio has been left with a scab right on his fetlock joint. Although he isn't lame due to pain anymore (has been checked by Vet, Physio, Saddler and Farrier since), he's still using the leg slightly funny, purely because the scab is limiting his mobility (think of scab on knee and not being able to bend it properly)

Vet advised against washing leg etc which I completely agreed with, but now this scab is rock hard and is clearly aggravating him. Now that it's just a scab, is there anything I can do to soften it/encourage it to fall off?

I've never had a horse with scabs or mud fever or anything before so not really sure how to go about it? Can I bath it in something mild, dry it properly and soften the scabs?

Apologies for sounding a bit clueless, any help is really appreciated!!

Thank you :)
