Hi All
I have recently brought an absolutely beautiful blanket spotted Apaloosa filly foal and she is now seven months old. When she is fully grown she will be around 15.2hh and she is registered with the Apaloosa Horse Society. I want to show her in the spring shows but wonder whether I can. The youngstock classes all say one, two and three year olds, and she is not yet a yearling. My friend who has shown youngsters says I can. If I can is it correct to plait up a foal for this type of horse. Any advice please

Yes I would think you should be able to show her somewhere. What classes were you hoping to enter? Are you English or western? You might find some western classes which could be suitable.

Hi there
I show her in English classes. I am from England.Yes I am sure I can show her in some classes although the Appaloosa and Western Riding is not as big here as it would be in Canada. Although the Appaloosas and paint horses are fetching very expensive prices here. It makes a nice change from a bay anyhow. Although I do have a lovely bay Thoroughbred as well.

There must be some foal shows that you can enter her into. Hang on in here, once more people are on tomorrow, I am sure someone will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Do you have any pictures of her? I have a some Appaloosa's too but they are all leopards.

she sounds lovely, most of the local shows have youngstock classes so you could show her as a yearling. You might even find the show has a class for coloureds/paints/spots etc. that you could enter. You could even have a go at young/senior handler to give her a bit of exposure. Also if you have any western shows/classes nearby you could have a go at showmanship which a lot of people with youngsters do. The world is your oyster with a breed like yours! Good Luck!

You can show her in the yearling classes/ youngstock. Doesnt matter that they are not one yet. They class the date as the 1st January ( doesnt matter what breed ) So if they are a 2006 foal they are technically classed as a yearling now. You would only show in foal classes if they were born this year. Thats my understanding of it.

Yes, you can show her this year, although if she's small, may be better to wait until later in the year. Appaloosa breed show is held at Moreton Morrell in August I think, should be a good range of classes there.

Western breeds are shown with manes loose or banded, tail natural and in a halter rather than a bridle. Tends to be all sorts in appy youngstock classes!

She needs to be registered with one of the two appy societies to be shown in their classes - their breed sec should be able to give you a local contact who can give you a bit more specific info. Sorry - my knowledge is limited to hunters and quarter horses!

Your youngster is a yearling though, not a foal, for showing classes. My pony isn't 2 until May but for showing he's now in 2 year old classes. From the 1st January they all move up a year regardless of what month in the year they were born.
