Thinking of buying a 15.3 cob. Is currently hogged with feathers.

1. Do you have to show with OR without e feathers?
2. Do you have to have hogged mane or can you plait?
3. If plaiting ok, How long will it take to grow a mane?
4. At 15.3 which classes could we enter?

Any advice much appreciated.

Do you have to show with OR without e feathers? Without if a show cob, full mane, tail and feathers if traditional.

2. Do you have to have hogged mane or can you plait? Hogged for show, free and flowing for traditional - never plaited!!

3. If plaiting ok, How long will it take to grow a mane? No plaiting!!

4. At 15.3 which classes could we enter? Depends on what level you are going for really, top level, would then depend on his build/bone as height restrictions vary for LW, MW and Maxi cobs.

Hope this helps a bit!

Depends on the type of cob. If he is a big hairy with lots of feather, you either need to show him completely natural, with mane and feather aflowing :D or hog it all off and go with show cob, there's no inbetween (atleast this is what I've been told lol).

If he's a welsh cob then I'm not sure and you'll need some welshy experts :)

My boy is a hairy and he's shown with everything on. It takes a damn good scrubbing to get him sparkling and gets wrapped up to the eye balls until the last minute but it's definitely worth it (see sig :) )

Ok, I'll try and answer-

yes- either bald all over or fully hairy, fully hairy though only if the horse is coloured or has a full breed soc. passport ie welsh.

3. If plaiting ok, How long will it take to grow a mane? No plaiting is NOT ok.

Get a measuring stick and see how many cm you can gte your horse down too, with a relaxed head and on level ground. If you can measure him in under 153cm you can do normal cob classes, if any bigger he's a maxi cob (if hogged). Trad CHAPS classes are done as under 148 and over, so he would be a large traditional if coloured and hairy.

Pictures please!

Only ever done the show cob bit, and he was fully hogged, clipped and with a pulled tail. I think some people do plait their cob's tail, but I personally found it a lot easier just to keep it pulled, as couldnt stand the faff of plaiting what would be a bush if left unchecked.

Dont have any experience of traditionals, and personally think that a hogged main with feathers left on looks a bit daft, but it is each to their own.

Good look and we want to see lots of pictures of your cob, please.

She's not coloured nor a native breed so thank you for all your advice and if she passes the vet, we'll remove the feathers. Will get the measuring stick out and then have a chat with our local riding club to see what we can enter her in. Will post pics when we get her - fingers crossed!

At affiliated level a ridden show cob should measure between 14.2hh and 15.1hh, and presented hogged, with pulled tail and feathers trimmed, so at 15.3hh yours would be classed as a 'maxi', ie a separate class for overheight cobs, and presented in the same way.

At local level it may not matter so much re height as you are less likely to find a 'maxi' class at local level.

If you do not want to hog, and the cob is not too heavyweight, you could re grow it's mane and show as a ridden hunter, and or working hunter if the horse jumps well. If it is a nice all rounder RC horse classes are fun too.

Re growing back the mane, if a horse has been hogged for a few years their manes do not tend to come back very nicely, (imagine bog brush!!!). It would certainly take a good few months to have enough re growth to plait, but depends on each individual.

Good luck if you do buy!

Thanks Sidney. She isn't a heavyweight and I take your point about the "bog brush". I think I might get very frustrated waiting for it to grow! I'm pretty sure you're right - there isn't a maxi cob class at our local. We'll probably do the classes you suggest. Many thanks
