We have a 2 1/2 yr old colt who we've started to prepare for licencing but we're having a few problems trying to get him to show off!!!
He is incredibly laid back which is great and obviously for day to day handling we wouldn't want him any different, but when he's being run up he could do with a bit more spark. He is running up nice and straight and next to you but lacks that sparky stallion showing off thing that he needs to do himself justice.
Hope this makes sense, basically need advice/ideas on how to teach him whe he gets trotted up he has to perform. (We've tried the pebbles in a tin can, plastic bag on the end of a stick but has anyone got any other ideas. Have also just changed his food to give him a bit more energy)
Thanks

I'm not really the best person to advise you as my boy never bloody stops showing off!

But I do know that other Arab in-hand showing people shake placcy bags and rattle pebbles in tins and so on. Trouble is, once you get into the ring, you are not allowed to use these things.

So - this is gonna sound silly, but have tried 'snorting and blowing' at him? You know the snorty noise that some horses make when they are excited? You can make the same noise by blowing out through your lips. This to a horse is the sound of excitement - so it might just signal to him that something exciting is happening...

I haven't used this technique myself (usually we are trying to stop Tobago getting too excited) but it might be worth a try. And it's a method you can use in the ring (discreetly), unlike bags and tins.

But you might find that the atmosphere at the showground - other stallions around, etc - will be enough in itself to 'perk him up' a bit and add the necessary sparkle.

thanks for advice, thought i'd better say as i haven't made it very clear, but he's going to be looked at at home first (dam!!!) and they'll advise us on putting him forwards for licencing. He's a warmblood so we're allowed whips, bags etc!!! just as well for mr laid back!!! bless him!!!
thanks

Ahhh... It's much more tricky jazzing them up at home. How long do you have for preparing him?

[/ QUOTE ]

er not long!!! we started about 3 weeks ago and have about another 1 1/2weeks. he's a very mature looking masculine colt, although he's going widen he does look like a proper boy. he's lunging and is getting fitter.
didn't realise how much teaching trotting up can take!! he's learnt to stay next to you and go with you and stays straight but need to just have that extra thing of showing off.

Ah, well in that case use the bags and pebbles and stuff - but not too much in training sessions or he'll get habituated and de-sensitized and they won't have much effect on the day. Another thing I've seen Arab show-trainers using is umbrellas!

Your boy sounds lovely - do you have any pics you could post?

I went to see one like this the same age as well. He perked up a bit when the other horses started playing about in the fields opposite the school. It is difficult if they are so laid back they dont show their stallion presence & yet everything else is ok. Good luck if he is anything like the one I saw he will make a lovely stallion if he passes on the movement & temperment.

I must say my 2yo is the same hun the other day at the pavo in hand a lady chased him with the whip and he didnt do anything he just doesnt care - as you say its great to have such a fantastic temprement but not when you actually need them to do something !!

Cant you see if he is different out - your more than welcome to box to mine and run round my school for an hour to practise if a different environment will help !!

he's by Sandro Hit out of a Weltruhm x Matcho mare. we're pleased with him, we're got two half brothers by Rhondeo and she's back in foal to San Amore as he was stunning and sandro hit blood seems to be a good match for her.
