I have a thoroughbred x warmblood mare, she has been broken for around 6 weeks and is taking everything into her stride, currently she is in a snaffle, but she is very strong and tosses her head in the air when you put the brakes on! she is in a running martingale but i was wondering what bit would be best to try next? or whether to leave her in a snaffle????? she is 3 1/2 yrs old

It sounds as if she isn't understanding what you are asking and pulls back as a response.

I've found that using a neckstrap when you apply the aids to slow down helps, as well as using voice aids helps to get the message across, also make sure the hands are used last after the seat/weight.

I wouldn't be changing the bit at this early stage unless it was to try something softer.

I also have a young mare who can pull back against the aid to stop. But she is improving. I was just wondering how you use the neck strap?

Simply apply pressure to the neck strap as you use the rein, they can have the effect of lowering the horses head and slowing them down. I know that there are quite a few trainers who use them on young horses until they've got the message.

There is also a glorified one here that gives some insight into how it works:- http://www.ttouch.com/shop/index.php?productID=213 or

Take her out of a running martingale as its putting more pressure on her mouth, try a standing, then patience and training

Voice? Maybe try a loose ring with the peanut in the middle, she might not like the nut cracker action

This!

Sometimes the nutcracker action of a single jointed bit can cause a head raising reaction.

I would try a Myler bit or a french link.
