My boy is a very green six year old ISH who was broken a year ago. I've had him almost 7 months and he's come on leaps and bounds. The only problem is, he really resents being told what to do. Any use of the whip or kick to get him listening results in a buck.

Physically he's absolutely fine; back, saddle and teeth all done recently and generally he's a really lovely boy. The problem is, he's quite lazy and when you use the aids to ask for a bit more impulsion, he objects! He's bucked me off a few times recently and I'm starting to feel like I don't want to push him for fear of getting bucked off again, but with the help of my fantastic trainier, we're working through it.

I'd just be interested to know if anyone else has experienced a problem like this and what they did to stop their horse over-reacting to the aids.

Thanks for reading :)

I'm no expert but am currently working with my baby and when pushed to work harder properly she objects, nothing major but back. Legs off the floor.. I just push her through it, and then make her come round and do what I had wanted quietly. Seems to be working. Sounds simple but have you tried singing so as not to be so worried about the bucks? Good luck!

Hi im asking this question out of interest and not in anyway saying its right of wrong but you say that your horse has only been broken a year -was he broken earlier and turned away or just broken and ridden on? the reason im asking is ive seen later started horses being more resentful to work when they are finally broken in and people dont tend to turn them away cos theyre older, also horses that were late gelded seem to be the same.

Thanks for your replies.

TallulahBright, this is more or less what I'm doing with my boy, it's just the giant bucks in between that are hampering it a bit! I haven't tried singing, but do talk to him constantly, I imagine my singing might annoy him even more than my aids but I'll give it a go!

Archiepoo, thanks for your question, I should have explained a bit more. He was broken and turned away as a young 4 year old and then brought back in a year ago as a 5 and a half year old so had quite a long break in between. I'm not sure what age he was when he was gelded, but will try to find out. Thanks for your suggestions :)

Sounds just like my 8 year old mare!! She too is an ISH. I also know she was broken in at 5 (after having a foal!) but don't know if she was turned away to mature. I have a very good instructor who just rides her through them, but she always unseats me! Sorry I don't have any constructive advice but I will be following this post, thanks x

Good to know I'm not alone Fishy! I know you have to take the rough with the smooth with youngsters, but I can't help feeling I've been very lucky with the falls I've had so far and just don't want to push my luck!
