Hi all :waves: i need some advice i've had my horse 3 years and has not always been in full work i used to ride him twice a week, he's always been a bit nervy on the ground and ridden, he's been out of work for a year due to me having a back op, im in 2 mind weather to sell or not, he is currently up for sale as i've lost my confidence but had no one interested as of yet, so do i sell and get something more dope on a drop so they say or, go have some lessons at a riding school and keep him.

A friend has taken him out a couple of times other than the odd spook which is just a quick splat he looked really good, she is a confident rider but can't do it all the time as she has a young baby, i did get the courage to ride him the other day with her walking with me but i felt really unsafe, i felt like he was bouncing from my nerves and i felt like he was a loaded gun i was terrified he was gonna take off with me, he has only ever done this once when i first got him from a pheasant but is easily stopped. I really don't know what to do, he is a lovely horse but i feel the bond with him has gone, i let a family member ride him whilst i was recovering for 4 weeks and in that time she came off and told me that he was very spooky, which he is, its just him i've tried getting him out of it by taking him back and repetition work, before now im worried that this is gonna happen all over again and my back can't take it now, aww i really don't know what to do, tea and biscuits if you got this far and understood my waffling :(

I think sunny weather is more saleable I don't think rain would sell well at all.

:D

I'll get my coat......

Sounds like you want to sell him actually but don't want to make the decision - but if you've lost the bond as you say best to let him go before the heart strings say otherwise - a more confident rider is probably what you pony needs. But at the end of the day that confident rider could be you given the right help! Sorry it's up to you.

It sounds as though you and the horse do wind each other up a bit. And you can't afford to come off and damage your back. I would ask you confident friend to re-write the advert as my guess is that you are underselling him because you don't feel confident on him. I'm not suggesting that you are less than honest but you only need to say something like 'goes better for a confident rider', you don't need to say that he runs off if he sees a pheasant.
Then when you have found him a suitable home you can buy yourself a nice, steady confidence-giver.

I'd sell.

But before you do, can you get some rides on other horses? No point selling to get another if the problem you have doesn't go with the horse. You might as well stick with this one and see if you can get a sharer or somebody to ride him regularly and bring him on/despook him.

Plus if you can get him back into regular work and going better, you should be able to get a better price and judging from reading here, "dopes on ropes" are expensive.

I was in your position three years ago.

I actually looked for someone to loan the horse first (mainly for me to detach the heart-strings and get some distance) and told her that at some point I knew I'd want to sell.

She loaned him for six months and then I decided to sell so that I could afford to buy another horse for myself.

Loaner decided she couldn't bare to part with him and so paid for him in installments...

Maybe if you can't decide now see if someone will loan him with a view to buy if they get on...

In the mean time get yourself some lessons and ride as many different horses as possible (it's what I did) that way you'll know if your confidence is just lost in your horse or all horses...

I'm now two years into owning a different more confidence giving horse and am considering buying something more sparky again... :D

Hmm.. I was lucky as the girl loaned from the yard I was already on...

Perhaps advertise him for loan with view to buy from your yard only. Someone might be interested, you don't know until you try!

From my recent experiences with my new horse, and having gone from having the ad written out and ready to go on the classified page, to absolutely adoring him and looking forward to our fun to come, I would have said keep yours, and work with him. But then again, I don't know you or the horse, or what it is you really want deep down. I really could write an essay on the subject but won't bore anyone with it!!

I'd sell and get a nice steady type that you can relax with and enjoy. Life is too short and horses expsensive to keep if you have doubts. I think you know yourself what would be the best answer.

I think i know he's not the horse for me now, and i know the bond has gone as far as ridden work, but im heartbroken as he is the most sweetest horse, but is totally different from ground and ridden, he needs full time work which me or my back cant supply, i've got a behaviorist booked for the 10th may to see if she can help with the spooking, but will continue to advertise him, thanks girls i really needed some opinions, as i don't want to loose the riding spark for good x

You really need to sell.

I'm sorry to say it & it will be difficult. I also have a very bad back (although not as bad as your's)
I understand how scary it is to be on a horse that is even a little bit spooky when you know that if you come off you are going to be in serious pain. The trouble is, that makes you tense which is bad for the back & also upsets the horse. I've been there, it's a vicious circle. (My back is starting to spasm just thinking about it!!!)

He doesn't sound suitable for you any more. The idea of loan with a view to buy from your yard is a very good one, or send him off to a sales livery perhaps?

Buy yourself a nice, quiet plod along pony & start enjoying riding again.

Good luck.

Follow your heart...as a woman who is slooooowly gaining her confidence back due to an evil ex racer (sorry to anyone I may have offended) I would say first things first, get back to riding in a controlled environment, I.e. a good riding school, no matter what! My instructor said one thingthat changed my mind "its supposed to be fun"....it made me think. Why pay out to be miserable? So, lately in my lessons, yes, I've been nervous, but I am smiling again...confidence is the one thing that's prescious with horses, buildit, don't lose it. There is a nationwide thing run by real instructors called 'taking back the reins' -i can't rate it enough. If it was me, I'd start that now, and sell or exchange, for something steadier, but it's your call...your needs have changed as has your ability to handle him, his needs have too he needs someone who can bring him on. Who knows though, you might get more confident just by riding with an instructor and decide you can handle whatever he has to throw at you. Good luck though, with whatever you choose...follow yourheart...keep us posted.x
