I am going to Bishop burton next year to do an Equine degree and am hoping to improve my riding down their... I would also like to buy a horse to take down with me too... but what type of horse would benefit the most from going down with me... would a younger one benefit from learning all the new things down their or get a one that has done everything... my budget is only really £4,500 and im trying to think of ways to get the best out of my money.... any ideas or advice, would be very greatfull! Thanks for reading x

Depends on how experienced you are to bring on a youngster, if others will be riding the horse or whether it will just be you. If you are keeping the horse at college, you wont have 100% attention and assistance bringing on a young horse, and potentially too many other people may get involved. Personally - would look for something that has a bit of experience - you can get that with a 6-7year old.

I went to moreton morrell a few years ago. It was very rare that any of the students who had their horses with them would ride their horse in any of the lessons- perhaps once every 2 months or so. Which meant they were riding between lectures/before/after college hours.
There are people on hand to help out but students on the whole were mostly left to their own devices with their horses. I'd say perhaps a 6 or 7 year old that has been out abit and seen different things so that going to a new, busy environment won't be a total shock to him, that you can still bring on but will feel comfortable with if there isn't as much help as you hope.

Personally I would save the money and buy once you have graduated. Taking a horse to college doesn't always work out and can be a huge demand on already limited time. There is the social side to enjoy don't forget and having your own horse to do can be a drain on your time and finances. I think it is incredibly beneficial to take horses with you on WP placements for example, but not to colleges.....but of course that is just personal opinion
