Hi all,
Am picking up a new pony on loan this weekend, she is not for me, she is for a friend, but will be living at mine :)
Problem is that i am sure she has not been wormed, her field is obviously not poopicked, she is extremely underweight and has a foal at foot. Foalie is 6 months old and will not be coming with his mum.
I am going to keep her in isolation for a while as her owner told me that she pulled a tapeworm out of her dogs bum the other day  so she more than likely has tapes
Any advice please on what to worm her with?
Because she will be coming from poor grazing onto slightly better grazing and having lots of little feeds to help build her back up will this upset her digestive system and affect how well the wormer works? Also the will the change to her system from her not feeding foalie anymore affect the wormer?
So excited to get this pretty little girl home :D

Worm count, then worm according to result.

If a very high count then probably 5 day Panacur, wait two weeks, worm for tapeworm, also need to retest and in a few weeks give Equest. If a medium-high count then probably Equest Pramox. It all depends really.

Sounds as though she is going to have a good home, enjoy!

Try "Intelligent Worming" which I now use, they will give you advice and put you on the relevant program and will then send the necessary wormers/sample pots as required. It is a great program that I have recently found and takes the whole remembering to worm out of the equation and, most importantly, avoids overly chemically worming horses.

When we have wormed new ones without knowing their worming history we have always been advised to use the panacur 5 day guard first. we were told that because this works over 5 days it reduces the amount of worms dispelled in one go and the risk of a blockage being caused by a mass of worms. We were then advised to do a worm count a few weeks later and if necessary re worm with an appropriate wormer.

Thanks guys,
That sounds sensible, will nip to the saddlery now and pick a worm count up :)
She seems like such a sweet girl, but has no sparkle in her eye, can't wait to see how much of a little monster she turns into when she's feeling a bit better :D

I think you have been given some good advice re worming... as for feeding, be careful not to feed her too much initially as her milk might not dry up as easily...

Only other thing is that a worm count won't show up tape worm... As it's Autumn it's a good idea to worm her for that anyway...
