Hi guys want your opinions please i am thinking seriously about moving yards. The current yard i'm at is just my horse plus the YO's 7horses well her 5 and her daughters 2. The arrangement we have is that she puts V's feed in in morning and sticks him out(i leave for work at 5.15am i'm a postie), and in exchange i take all of her lot in. so basically i end up getting part livery for price of DIY, I pay £40 p/w this includes straw, haylage, hard feed. I'd say Vinnie is pretty happy their generally. My main issues are that i have ended up doing an awful lot more than just taking her horses in i also end up filling nets and hanging them, doing the feeds, water buckets etc (i find it very difficult to say no or if i get their and somethings not done who else is going to do it? i used to work on a yard for years and i feel she takes avantage of this), i am also not to happy that when it rains even just slightly the horses do not get out. V is only 18months old so i dont feel its fair on him or good for him to be stabled so much
Also just lately there have been notes left saying make sure the muck heap is kept tidy, yard is swept etc this is obviously aimed at me even though i am pretty obssesivly tidy at the yard to stop such things occuring after all i'm only mucking out 1 horse she's doing 7. There is also no mains electricity and the generator never works properly i have to muck out by car lights. Approx 5miles away (sorry rant over)

So the new yard is in my Village i can see the stables from my window they are a 2minute walk away. The couple who own them are lovely. £20p/w to include hay and straw, bigger stable than what he's in now the horses only come in at night in winter otherwise out 24/7 with access into the stables all the time. good grazing. my only concerns are that the 2 horses they have are very old 1is a 31yr old ex racehorse who has not 100% vision and the other is a 20yr old pony i am concerned that V being so young might upset them considerably although he is generally a very quiet boy and is used to being turned out with all types of horses old and young he just generally keeps himself to himself. my other main concern is that they strip graze with electric fencing V has never met electric fencing and i'm concerned he will just jump clean over this as its fairly low. i've never used electric tape fencing before what do you guys think? this place also has no electricity but i think that wont be so much of a problem as i generally finish work about 2pm and i live so close and i'm not doing anyone elses horses at this yard.

soooooo lol was just wondering what your opinions are should i stay with the devil i know or move closer to home and save myself some cash and time?

Thankyou sooo much if you read all this

I think Vinnie will get used to the fencing but i'm sure it will freak him out at first. I think I'd move just for the fact of being closer to home ! I think you'd rock the PJ's and wellies look !

lol thanks that would be great to just trundle up in the pjs

I think I would be tempted to move closer to home. You could always ask if it would be ok to put up some higher posts for the electric fencing so v is not so likely to want to jump, and also after he has touched it and got a shock he may not be so keen any way!! In my experience old ponies are quite clever at keeping the younger ones in check, and as your boy is quiet anyway I wouldn't worry too much about that. I really think the yard owner where you are at the min is taking the p.$%.

In my opinion i would not want to be up either

, only cuz of the no electricity, but the new yard being closer to you will probally be more convenient, i would look around at a couple of other yards if you can and then make your mind up, but thats just me

Sounds like you're currently being taken advantage of.

If you moved yards you would have so much more time to spend with your horse - I think that's what it's all about...

If thems your choices, I'd go to yard two. Better turnout, bigger stables and closer to home. Don't worry about the electric tape - once he's had a belt round the nose from it he'll probably stay well away - asking if you can buy the taller poles and double line the tape to start with is a good idea though. Bear in mind it is also £20 a week cheaper, although you have to buy your own hard feed, but does that cost you over £80 a month? You could use that money to buy the taller posts!

Thanks Ellie and HollyB.

its not ideal but all the other yards i'v looked at are so much further away, we are going to get some of those battery operated lights to hang from the roof lol but so long as i can muck out and set his stable for the night in daylight i can do the rest when its a bit darker and its not like i would have to traipse up roads to get them the stables are in the field at the new yard whereas old yard i have to cross roads etc to catch them in and some of them are not the easiest horses t deal with. its more the fencing and old horses i'm concerned with at new place, i am verging more towards new yard thanks guys. x

ChicoMio you are right

how much are you for a big pole roughly? lol

his hard feed wont cost that much i dont think i just give him topsec feed balancer the bag lasts a while, chaff and fibre beet he looks fab on this

if it was me i would be moving to yard 2. as your only really worry is electric fencing he will soon get use to it. my foal had not met electric fencing until yesterday within 5 minutes she soon realised what it was all about.

oh thats not bad! for some reason i had it in my head they'd be a lot more than that

i might just go buy some poles and some tape x
