This is a pointless post, so I dont want anyone having a heated debate on here.

Smokey has been the best horse I have ever ridden, he's taken everything in his stride, and been super. But last time I went to ride him, picking out his feet, he like fell onto the side his foot was up, and then threw his was around when being ridden, but was fine otherwise and jumped amazingly.

Today, he did the same when picking his feet out, and threw his head around when being ridden, and went to jump and he threw me off, twice!! I'm amazed, because he never stops at fences, ever, and this wasn't even big, only 1m!

Now I know he is at his 3rd yard since I've had him, so he is stressed, and I know it could be loads of different things, but I'm really worried.

I dont want to jump on the 'his back needs checking' yet, until he has fully settled in.

But those of you who know me, I have like NO fear when riding, and it really scared me today, maybe I'm getting old (it's my 20th today!!)

It seriously went through my mind of selling him today and giving up :( but I love him, and this is the only time he's put a toe out of line...

Birthday cake and cider for those who got this far!

You considered selling him after one incidents?
A bit extreme.
Why had he moved so many times?
Yeah ne must be stressed don't ask to much of him while he is insecure.

Get all things checked. Teeth, back and saddle. Try a physio too.
Stress could have made him lose condition, also what is hid feed and turn out and routine?

I read this as the last time you rode before today he showed some discomfort and threw his head around but jumped ok, so today you rode him, not ridden in the days between, again he was showing discomfort but you again jumped him and he said NO! He is trying to tell you something.

I should think he is probably sore somewhere, he has changed shape a huge amount since you bought him looking rather poor, I would get his back and saddle checked as routine for a horse that has improved so much in its topline.

Thanks ChristmasSparkles :)

Yes I know it is extreme to consider after just one very very small incident, but I cannot risk not being able to do my job due to a fall! It scared me, and I'm not used to that feeling.

The first yard I had him on they kept moving all the other horses to the winter grazing (all were cobs and smokey is tb) without telling me, so I couldn't move him, but when I was feeding smoke each day, due to my shifts it was early morning and late evening, do they had been moved back to where he was by then. That continued for 2 weeks until My shifts changed and I went down slightly later to see him all alone, sweated up with a big cut to his leg. So we then moved like the next week, didn't want to be there anymore for obvious reasons, but the only yard that had spaces at the time was just grass livery, no school, but good grass so he has the winter off to fatten up. Then I moved house, and found a lovely yard closer to home, with facilities, so he came with me as soon as they had space.

He is the most unfizzy tb ever, is on apple chaff, baileys no.17 top line conditioning mix and fibre beet, and 2 squirts of linseed oil a day. He's out in the day in at night. Ridden 2 days, then 1 off then lunged.

Sorry, I typed it all a bit flustered. He has been ridden in between the 2 occasions by me and sharer and been completely fine, no signs of any discomfort or unhappiness, which is why I don't want to jump to his back/saddle yet, but his saddle is wintec and does get changed when he changes.

His teeth are due in June, but may get them dove earlier if it comes to it.

Thanks for the advice, I just needed a ramble on, but I will get a physio out to check him over :)

Thanks, bexcy-bee x

Well Bexcy-bee the obvious answer to your concerns is to have your vet out to examine the horse.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

You may need to check teeth, my 5 yo tb is on six monthly checks rather than a year as they get sharp very quickly. I would check feet and legs thoroughly if he's not happy with you picking feet up. Could be an early warning sign of something niggling there.

how old is he? i can't remember:confused:
It could be nothing more than 'that time of year';) on sunday one of mine pulled back when tied up and pulled the ring out of the tie up post:rolleyes:later that day he did it again but this time pulled the whole bloomin post out:mad: no reason that i could see, he just reverted back to how he was a year ago when he wouldn't be tied up:rolleyes: I'm putting it down to the grass coming through and the warm weather making him feel a bit too good about himself, but a little bit of me is annoyed/upset because it's a habit i thought we had finally sorted:rolleyes:
