My horse has started behaving in a very strange way, can anyone offer any advice..
Brief outline- I have an equilibriam massage pad that broke and I replaced the battery. He had not worn the pad for a while but once fixed I used it on him, when I put it on he went beserk, he has never behaved like this with it before, he humped his back and bronced round the stable. He then settled and was fine with it but ever since he has been difficult to handle. He is scared of being girthed up,he cringes and his muscles tense behing his elbows, he jumps every time I touch him, he gets worried when I put the saddle on and jumps and cringes when I take the rugs on and off. If I touch him on his girth area, back or quaters he is worried and clamps his tail down.
This morning I lunged him, it was raining so I put the sheet and roller on which scared him and he cringed about the roller.
The strange thing is that when I ride him he feels better than ever. He is fine to get on, he is fine on the lunge, stretching and forward. He is not bucking or rearing or swishing at all.He is also fine to get on although if he has the exercise sheet on and the fillet string touches his he will clamp his tail down which he never used to.

I am at a loss.

Would you think it would be a good idea to give him a couple of weeks off of riding and just lunge with the draw reins over his back and between his legs without a roller/girth to get him to stretch and get the vet if no better or would you get the vet straight away?

Half of me thinks he hurts and the other half thinks it was caused by the massage pad.
He has been like it on and off since I used the pad 3 or 4 weeks ago. Some days he is worse than others.

I am concerned he has kissing spine or worse but he was fine until I put the pad on and I would think he would be naughty to ride but he isn't.

Could it be that the replaced battery gave said pad more oooomph than he was used to with the older battery???

Sounds like recognition of pain- as in that hurt once, may hurt again, rather than it actually does hurt.

Maybe get the vet (or backperson if you use one) to give his back a once over......

Ditto this ^^^^^ what I was thinking in the first instance it sounds as though he has had a bit of a zap from the pad....and now thinks everything will give him a zap!

I would also perhaps get him looked at too...and also your massage pad checked.

That was my initial thoughts to.... He sounds like he is worrying about being hurt. Maybe the pad had a power surge from the new batteries which gave him a bit of a shock? (i'm no electrician though lol). The fact that he is fine ridden and lunged makes me think he is OK just anticipating pain after the experience of the pad?

I did think that but its used on 4 more horses and they are fine with it. I think it was more the straps to be honest but not 100% sure.

I think that behaviourally you may have flooded him when you left the pad on until he settled. That means that he didn't really accept the pad, but was forced to because he couldn't get away from it. Unfortunately, if this happens then it can cause a lot of problems in the future.
I'm not saying you've been horrible to your horse, this is something that can be done quite easily if you don't recognise the signs. Flooding can work, but when it doesn't then it's a bit tricky to put right.
I wouldn't use the massage pad again, and depending on how bad his fear of other things around his back is now, I might seek professional advice. Ben Hart could be a good person to speak to http://www.hartshorsemanship.com/
It might be worth getting him checked out physically as well, but you sound as if you are pretty clear that this problem can be identified as starting after his incident with the massage pad. If this has resulted in him developing a real fear of rugs etc then you need to be a bit careful about how you get him over it (to avoid flooding him more). It seems a bit dire to start worrying about kissing spine as yet, when you seem to know that the trigger was the massage pad.
