i have just been down the field to ride gymbo went to put his bridle on and he will not except the bit in his mouth i rode him friday with no problems and he is not the awkward sort had a look in his mouth and nothing visable tryed for over half an hour any suggestions>???

has he got any rubs anywhere else like where his bridle would sit? perhaps it irrated him lat time you rode and is remembering? we used to have a young horse that didnt like the bit we would put a bit of bread covered in jam around the the bit and he would take it straight away. and other than getting a vet to check his teeth not really sure what else to suggest

put two fingers in the corner of his mouth if he isn't opening it...that way they gag and open their mouth but there's no risk of you getting bit because their teeth finish before there...sounds harsh but it works

Is the brow band a bit tight? My friend had that problem a while ago.
Has anyone else got access to him in his field? Maybe someone has spooked him?

i usually use this method on youngsters i back and break in, i also used it on one of our 15.3hh welsh cob section D stallions as he would toss his head up everywhere!
ok you do all the things in order to put his bridle on so bit on hand and browband half way up etc, but place a slice of bread on the palm of your hand with the bit on top, so this way he might go for the bread and you can slip it in, using your thumb in gum if needed.
try this it might work for you as it does for me:)

I suspect he is having you on if there are no obvious problems, use the finger in the corner of the mouth trick as above or some food with the bit, and unless he has a reaction once it is in then assume he is just being awkward.

oh and another thing i forgot to mention, if he is really taking the piss, twitch the god damn thing. But be careful he doesnt stomp out with his front feet, make sure siomeone is there with you!
good luck.

Merlin has always been a monkey to tack up. He just does not open his mouth for anything.

I put a mint in the palm of my hand and the bit on top of that...... if he wants one he gets the other!!!! Works everytime....

I know he is just having me on though....... other horses may be trying to tell you something

has he been eating nettles/similar plants? mine was hard to tackup once as he'd been munching on nettles and had a very sensitive mouth! Had to not ride for a few days untill the soreness went! (then he did it again!)
