Does anyone have any experience of a fetlock break? Is this a fixable break? Have just had some devestating news and are awaiting the opinion from a specialist as to what is going to happen so trying to prepare myself for what will come back.

Very much depends on the nature of the fracture. Many of them are repairable now using screws or plates combined with a period in a cast.

The highest risk period is when the horse comes around from the anaesthetic as obviously it has to get to its feet by itself, there is a danger that the repair will fail or the horse will break another leg.

That said if the type of fracture is right and the surgery and anaesthetic recovery are successful the chances of a return to useful work are very high. Obviously there is a long period of rest and rehabilitation involved but there are many horses living happy useful lives that have had various fractures surgically repaired.

Best of luck

Thank you very much for this information - he is in the vet school getting a bone scan. I have everything crossed - thanks for taking the time to reply xx
