Both of the small ponies have ear plaques in their left ear. They are not very sensitive, although I am very tactful when bridling. My inclination is to leave well alone as I have had experience in the past of fiddling with creams and not solving the problem. Does anyone have experience of treatments that work permanently? I would like to use herbal or homeopathic remedies if they are available....any experts out there?! Thank you!

The only thing I have ever used is Camrosa which does work to soften them, but this was on a horse whose ears were becoming very stiff - a fly net over the ears in summer is one of the best ways to stop them getting worse.

hi my vet came out today to my mare who we thought had ear plaques and he said to leave them alone if u interfere it can be unpleasant for the horse. he said he had a horse and they had a bridle made up with a buckle on the headpiece so u didnt hae to touch his ears and he was perfectly fine.

Hi they are called aural plaques. Some horses have them and aren't bothered by them. Some horses like my friends gelding are hyper sensitive and you end up taking the bridle to bits to put it on. If you google aural plaques you will read about lots of poor horses that really suffer with them.

We used Dermafas http://www.dermafas.com/ on her gelding and we went from having to sedate and twitch him to get it in initially to being able to put it in without a headcollar over a month of daily application.

There is another cream which can only be obtained from a vet called Aldara. This has had quite good results at removing the plaques. We decided not to go down this route as it can make the ears quite sore during the process and his plaques weren't that visible so were manageable with the dermafas.

If the horse isn't bothered by them, leave well alone. If he/she is then I'd consider one of the above options.
