Today the vet came to vaccinate my colt and I asked regarding his mane loss. Vet advised a parosite and to use Coopers Fly Repellant for 1 week and see if it goes.

His 8 months old and stabled over night and also rugged. It's not been chewed by another horse and I believe his been rubbing it out on his salt lick holder - this has now been removed from his stable.

At the moment his lost 4 inches of mane in the middle of his neck and it's bald and red raw. More seems to disappear each night.

His now got a funny tummy and diarrhoea but has been wormed twice in the 4 months I've had him.

Would just like any further information /advice - parosites seems so broad!

How would I know if he did?

Its only his neck that his rubbing out - would lice not be all over his body?

I have used the Cooper Fly Rep Plus tonight all over his body?

Would lice live in his rugs?

they tend to start in the mane- they will be all over his body eventually.

if you look closely at his mane you will be able to see the lice, and egg sacks. it can be hard to see depending on the colour of the mane.

if any of mine were itchy just now, especially around the mane i would de-louse.

never used or seen coopers fly stuff so no idea what it treats- i use flypor on mine which gets rid of lice. its known as permethrin. you pour it on along the mane and spine from ears to tail and repeat in two weeks. usually about 40 mls for an adult horse of around 14-15 hands.

the lice may well be on the rugs, but wont survive without a host.

The lice could survive in the rug and in the stable itself.
You should be able to see them in good light if you part the hair or be able to comb out dead ones hopefully

Take care putting chemicals near the raw area

Hard to advise on the upset tum, we dont know what wormers you have used or what exposure to worms your youngster has had--Panacur Equine Guard over 5 days would be the choice at this time of year

Maybe haylage is very rich if that is what you are feeding

Talk through with your vet or yard Owner if he/she is knowledgeable

Thanks for the advice.

His black and no one could see anything in his mane etc but that doesn't mean they are not there I guess.

The Cooper stuff was recommended by the vet and at £30 I hope it works - its for flys/mites/lice/sweet itch.
The reviews on powder are not very positive. I will get some powder as well and cover his rugs inside - I just can't wash them at the moment as they are the only ones he has. And I don't want to use others if I will just spread it.

My vet didn't seem concerned and said just Coopers and review in one week. So that's why I have googled and added this post. My yard manager is not concerned - thinks i wrap him up in cotton wall!

Reviews say to clip but his only 8months.

His on normal dry hay - and his stud cube and happy hoof feeds have not changed. I wonder if the storms today have upset his tummy and the vaccination his had, I will see what his like tomorrow.

With the sores on his neck when they first appeared I put dermagel and its taken down the red ness and blood spots but today I have put the Coopers straight on it but it was not red raw anymore.

With his neck it seems bits fall out each night.
