Advice please, my dog has suddenly gone lame and appears depressed

I have a two year-old Yorkshire terrier and usually he is very happy and healthy, absolutely full of life. He seemed to be a bit subdued on Thursday and Friday morning, my mum thought he'd hurt his leg or something (he jumps around a lot and quite high for his size), after that short time he was fine.

This evening he's been his usual self, playing and yapping, I've been working upstairs and heard my dad asking him if he was ok downstairs, went down to find him sitting under a chair, not wanting to move. He'd been licking his left hind paw. I got him out and he was lame on that leg, not wanting to walk, however when I picked him up he did bear weight on the leg. I then took him upstairs to bed (he sleeps in my parents' bed) and he just ran under the bed and didn't want to come out. He was listening when we were calling him but didn't want to move, he is definitely in pain. Eventually I got him out and put him to bed.

I'm just really worried as it has come on so suddenly, I googled the symptoms of dogs who have strokes and he doesn't appear to be showing any of those, he is only 2 as well. Mum thinks he has just sprained his leg or something, but I can't help being concerned.

Any advice much appreciated, sorry it is late.

If he's sore he will be depressed. Take him to the vets first thing tomorrow as he probably needs some pain relief.

Thank you Susie, I'll see how he is in the morning and if he isn't any better will take him to the vets for some treatment. Hopefully some rest will help.

Thank you for the replies. Niki, I'm pretty sure he hasn't as we live in a built up area and so he is never off the lead unless we're in the park where there are very few roads, and he stays quite close to whoever is walking him so we would have noticed if he'd been hurt. We have a small garden as well so would have noticed if something like a fox had got in and hurt him.

He's displaying the same behaviour as when his manly parts are exposed, as happens sometimes; when it does he tends to curl up and hide slightly until it has gone back in. So I'm not sure whether that could be hurting as well for some reason. Hopefully he'll be better tomorrow, if no real improvement will go to the vets.

It could very well be a kidney infection - my dog displayed exactly the same symptoms. There wasn't anything obvious in the penis area, and was treated with antibiotics.

Hope he perks up x

He seems absolutely fine this morning fortunately, mum has just taken him for a walk. She suggested that his reluctance to move could have been because he thought he was going to have a bath, he usually has one on a Sunday evening (but not yesterday) and he does try to hide to avoid it. He is a very clever little dog, so could have been up to something! Will keep an eye on his leg, but not taking him to the vet yet as hopefully he is ok.

Thanks again for the replies,

Thanks, I got back from the yard this morning and my mum was taking him out, so I didn't really have much choice! Apparently he was asking to go out, and he was fine on the walk. Will go straight to the vets though if the same thing happens again, as of course it could indicate something serious.

I agree with CC a general check up at the vet to be on the safe side.

I also noticed you said he has a bath every Sunday, is there a reason for this? dogs dont need to be bathed that often because its bad for their skin.
